A chef and a waitress
Who: Isaiah Williamson and Marlowe Evans-Rembrandt
Where: The Owl's Nest
When: Around 3ish in the afternoon
It was rare for Isaiah's dad to take a full day off from the restaurant. Isaiah pushed him to do it more often, knowing his dad needed the time away, and Sai knew he was capable of running the place without Josiah here. Now he just had to prove it, to everyone he worked with - and most importantly, to himself.
He came to work early in the afternoon, giving himself plenty of time to look over the orders placed earlier in the day and to make sure everything was in place before the evening rush began. Tonight's specials looked like they'd well - especially the filet mignon, Isaiah might get that one for himself before the night was done - and he was psyched as he printed out the inserts to add to the menus. It was going to be a good night in the restaurant, Isaiah could already tell.
Going out to the front of the restaurant, leaving his chef's jacket in the office, Isaiah handed the stack of specials to the hostess by the door. "Are you the only one working tonight?" he asked, glancing around the lounge area.
The hostess, Stephanie, shrugged. "Chelsea's supposed to be here by now, but I have no idea where she is."
Isaiah rubbed his eyes. Of course Chelsea would skip out on a shift - she probably thought she didn't have to be here. She'd come in if asked, Sai knew that, but still, not something he should have to do. "Did anyone call her yet?"
Stephanie's face went blank. "Um... no?"
His only answer was to pick up the cordless phone nearby and hand it to the girl. If Isaiah had to call, it wouldn't be pretty. He was just looking for a smooth, problem-free night; he didn't need to worry about the servers and hostesses, too. The kitchen would give him enough trouble, but that's what a manager did, deal with all aspects of the business.
Marlowe debated with herself for near to an hour before she found herself wrapped in a yellow, full length rain slicker with matching hat and a pair of black rain boots inside the black Impala driving through the rain. Sure she could have waited until tomorrow to go check on a possible job, but with the jobs she might be qualified for being scarce in a town the size of Scarlet Oak, Marlowe didn't want to lose out by waiting a day. So the blonde braved the weather, even though she was constantly of the thought to turn around and just go back home where it was dry and warm, and managed to make it all the way to The Owl's Nest.
Parking as near to the entrance as she could, Marlowe grabbed the umbrella from the floor on the passenger side and started opening it as soon as the driver's door was eased open. From there it was a race beneath the doomed shield over her head to the front entrance of the restaurant. Once inside she shook out the umbrella before collapsing it down to half it's size. No sooner had she done that then Marlowe was met by the hostess, Stephanie. "Table for one?" The hostess inquired when she noted the woman had seemed to have come in alone. "Actually I was wondering if you were still accepting applications for the waitressing job I heard was available." Marlowe said in return to the woman.
"Let me see if I can locate one for you." Stephanie said to the blonde with a smile before wandering off to do just that.
Isaiah was looking over the hostess schedule, trying to think of who he might be able to call in if indeed Chelsea didn't show up for her shift, when the woman walked in. Seeing as Stephanie was doing her job and greeted her already, he didn't feel the need to step in - until he heard she was looking for a job. His head snapped up and he gave the woman an easy smile. Isaiah didn't usually do the hiring for the restaurant, but he had a good eye for people. "We're still hiring, last I knew," he said, offering her a hand to shake. "What kind of position were you looking for? With the summer in full swing, we usually need the help this time of year."
He paused, adding, "I'm Isaiah Williamson, my family owns the place." Granted, he didn't look like a manager of a restaurant, being that he was young and not dressed for the part, but he'd all but grown up in this place.
As the hostess stepped away Marlowe tugged off the floppy rain hat she had been wearing and then shrugged out of the yellow rain slicker glad to be out of the rain apparel, and more important out of the rain itself.
"Marlowe Evans-Rembrant." The blonde smiled back to the man, reaching out to shake the hand he offered to her. "And that would be waitressing. It's what I did back in Tennesse." She explained briefly to the man who had taken up conversation with her after Stephanie had stepped away.
"Nice to meet you, Marlowe." And it was, Isaiah did always like meeting the people who came into the restaurant, especially if they were looking to work here. Usually his dad was in charge of the hiring, but if Isaiah found someone he liked, then Josiah usually trusted his son's judgement. Most of the time it paid off - it had with Graham, working in the bar, until he went a little MIA. Come to think of it, Sai hadn't seen Graham since they all went out drinking, a week ago now. He'd have to look into that later.
Shaking his head as if to clear it, Isaiah turned his attention to the woman before him. "Tennessee? What brings you up to Michigan?" It was a long way to travel, and Scarlet Oak wasn't the biggest town to end up in. To him, the place was awesome, because it was his territory and he'd always considered it to be his home.
"My great aunt, actually the house she used to live in. When she passed on her house was passed on to my family and I was the lucky one who drew the short straw." Marlowe answered the guy with a smile, though she had spoken teasingly about having inherited the house by drawing the short straw.
"Let me guess, it's one of those places that needs a lot of work?" If it was a house you loved, and a place that meant something to you, then it would be worth the work you put into it, in Isaiah's mind. "Sorry to hear that your great aunt passed away, though. Hopefully you're finding the town to your liking." Seeing as she was from Tennessee, the winter might be a bit tough, but they had months before the snow would be an issue. It would be a pain to ride his motorcycle in, but otherwise, Isaiah didn't mind the cold weather.
"Yeah," Marlowe responded, "it's got a little bit of work for us to look forward to doing, but at least it's liveable." The hostess returned then with a blank application for the blonde, which she handed to Marlowe before taking a couple short steps back as the woman was in conversation with Isaiah so as not to disrupt them, but was still near enough her post to be able to greet any customers that might wander in from the rain. "Scarlet Oak seems a nice place." Though her and Lucius had only been in town a few short days they were finding no faults with the town.
"It is. And I'm not saying that because I grew up here, either. I genuinely do love the place." That was part the man talking, and part the falcon - who had claimed Scarlet Oak as his territory. Even without the Owl's Nest being here, and knowing that someday the restaurant would be passed down to him, Isaiah would have a hard time leaving the town he'd grown up in. Now that Stephanie had brought the application over, Isaiah asked, "So what kind of work were you looking for? Part time, full time?"
"I'm hoping to work four days a week. Not sure if you would consider 32 hours a week to be full or part time." Marlowe knew that full time hours varied from business to business. One place might require a person to work 40 hours a week to be considered a full time employee while another would have a range from 32 to 40 hours a week for an employee to be considered a full time employee.
Isaiah thought about it for a second, trying to remember which servers worked which shifts and how many hours that turned out to be. "I think that's pretty close to full time for us," he said, "though a lot of the servers work more hours than that, seeing as this is our busy season. Are you looking for day or night shifts?" The lunch rush was busy, yes, but the night was where most of the money was made. If Marlowe had waitressing experience, he didn't see why she couldn't fit in with the rest of the staff here.
"I was really looking to work days, but if would come down to me getting the work or not I'd be willing to work a night shift or two." Granted it would take away some of the time she'd be able to spend with Lucius, but right now to Marlowe building up a little nest egg would be worth the little less time spent with the husband. At least they would still be able to spend the weekends together.
"Actually, working days might be better for us. A lot people want to work nights, so if you want the day shift, chances are you can get it. I'd have to look at the schedule to be sure." And if she was willing to pick up a night or two here and there, even better. This was the time of year when they had a lot of flexibility with their hours, and the extra help was always a good thing. His personal feelings about whether or not Heme was good for the town aside, it was bringing more people into Scarlet Oak, and more business along with it.
"Days would probably work better for my husband too." Marlowe smiled with the mention of her better half. "When might I start if you decide to hire me?" The blonde asked while finding a pen with which to fill out the application she had been given. The way their conversation was going Marlowe was almost one hundred percent that she had the job locked up and she could only hope that she'd be working within the next couple of days.
He smiled at that. The restaurant business wasn't always kind to one's love life, he knew that himself, and had seen what his parents went through when he was younger, with his dad always here running the place. "I'll have to run it by my dad, and he's off today, but he'll be back in tomorrow morning." Even with the full moon the next night, both Josiah and Isaiah would check in on the place before taking the night off. "But I don't think it would be a problem, so maybe Wednesday or Thursday? Whatever's going to work out for you."
"Either day would work for me." Marlowe told the man with a smile. It would give her time to do a little more around the house before having to content with a couple days of work. "I'll just get this application filled out and then after you check it over and run things past your dad you can give me a call." Marlowe said pleasantly, and hopefully a call that would be good news to the blonde.
Isaiah nodded, "That sounds perfect to me. We'll definitely have a call to you tomorrow morning some time." It wouldn't take long to discuss that with Josiah and if Isaiah was being honest, he liked Marlowe already. He didn't see a reason why they wouldn't bring her on. And, if she was up to it, she could come in on Wednesday and start to get a feel for how they ran things, both Isaiah and his dad would be there then.
Marlowe took the next few moments to get the application filled out to completion and then handed the form over to Isaiah before tucking her pen away. "I should be home pretty much all day tomorrow as there's still a lot to be done at the house as me and my husband, Lucius just moved into the place after it had been sitting vacant for a little bit of time now." Marlowe relayed to Isaiah even though he might not have been needing to all that. She had a good feeling about the man and the restaurant, and hoped after he spoke to his father both would be of the agreement to hire her.
With a brief look over the application, Isaiah nodded. She'd work out fine here, if she wanted the job, and it seemed she did. "Excellent. Suppose I'll be talking to you then?" He shot her another smile, "And good luck with the house, I'm sure you and your husband will get everything up and running in no time." And speaking of getting things up and running, he should probably get back out to the kitchen soon, to make sure everything was prepped in time for the evening rush.
"It helps having a qualified handyman at your disposal 24/7." Marlowe said with a little bit of a grin as she put her rain hat back on and slipped back into her yellow raincoat. The conversation she had had with Isaiah and the filling out of the job application had been a breeze compared to what she was about to embark on. Heading back out into the rain was anywhere near a pleasant thought for the blonde. "I'll be expecting your call." The parting words given to Isaiah with a pleasant smile before Marlowe turned away from the man to head for the exit with umbrella in hand. It would take her at least a few moments before she'd be able to brave the weather to make a mad dash for the Impala.
