Lost in the supermarket
Who: Nicolas and Miranda
When: Early afternoon.
Where: The grocery store.
Nicolas always put off running errands for as long as he possibly could. They always tended to slip his mind, and when he did remember, the thought of having to go out and deal with crowds gave him a preemptive headache. But after attempting to make breakfast this morning with nothing but a piece of bread and a wilted bunch of celery, he reluctantly realized he didn't have much of a choice.
It wasn't the volume of peoples' voices around him that bothered him, even the shrieking children running past him and slamming into passersby with miniature carts. It was the pressure in his head, the overlapping snippets of thoughts he couldn't even make out because there were too many of them. Loud voices weren't nearly so bad. People couldn't speak with more than one voice at a time, but anyone could have multiple trains of thought running at once, and all of it became white noise projected straight into Nick's mind.
He'd never developed a fully-effective system for dealing with that, but it helped to have a task to focus on, and to talk to himself out loud as he did it. If he was concentrating on that, everything else faded into the background somewhat. He didn't care much if people around him gave him a wide berth for mumbling like a crazy person as he walked down the aisles; it wasn't as if he knew any of them, or would have to see them again.
