"Got the advantage of having been one once though. And I remember being that age and what I was after... don't like thinking some boy has thoughts like that about my daughter." Knee-high, now that Hap could deal with. Back then when scraped knees were a major problem and that giant lollipop at the store was what they wanted. Now if Denise had just stayed that way forever then he was sure he could have handled everything. "Oh," he glanced down at his hand, fingering the ring. A little ache echoed through his chest at the thought and his hand went into the pocket of his jeans. "Yeah, um... no, I'm not. I mean you realized right. I'm a widower who just hasn't taken off the ring." Had the daycare been open when Tanya had passed away? He could not remember, but it was better to try and remember dates and openings than focus on the fact that his wife was gone.
"Oh only one for me." Hap grinned and shook his head. The idea of more than one Denise... wow, that would be more than a handful. That would be edging on insanity. "Well, one daughter one son, pretty good kids in general. But hey, a barbecue, perfect thing to do on the fourth. We being...?" It was not that he was nosy so much as that he just made a habit of trying to know things. Because as had been evidence right now, he needed to try and remember people better so that he did not make an idiot of himself when they were saying hello, already knowing who he was. A quick glance at her hands did not reveal a ring so 'we' did not seem to be a husband. Hadn't there been someone else involved with the daycare or was he thinking of a ghost?
