“Maybe not all the possibilities,” Brady said with a sarcastic tone and a bit of a snort. “Everything that I know to possibly expect, probably… but not everything. Someone enjoys tossing stuff at us for no other reason other than to just screw us over. It’s annoying, but that’s life, I guess.” What was it that some people said? God was vengeful? Apparently, God truly was quite vengeful. Or, at least had to get his jollies by messing around with people. “I tried to do as much as I could early so that I wouldn’t have to have it all pile up on me right when it was crunch time. Preparation is something I’m good at, but I found out that sometimes it isn’t enough.”
The man shook his head at his friend. “No, I’m the absolute last person that you want to give a gun to, no matter the situation. I’m probably more likely to hold the damned thing backwards and end up shooting myself. But, you can be the second worst person in the world to give a gun to.” Brady smiled. He certainly wasn’t above making fun of himself. Usually, he ended up being his own favorite topic.
At Kevin’s mention, Brady grew a little solemn. Brady was personally closer to Quentin, being of similar mindsets and ages, but that didn’t mean that he disliked Kevin at all. If Brady had a big brother, he’d want someone like Kevin, probably. He loved his two big sisters dearly, but it had long been something he had wanted, even secretly. A brother. Instead, he got Brandon. Shafted? Indeed.
“I never thought you hated me.” And he didn’t think that. “As for me and Emma Jane… well, there was some awkwardness between us for a little bit. A few days. But we got over it. I told her what I was worried about. I just hope to God that she understood what I was saying. I’m only trying to protect her. To keep her from getting hurt.” It would have sucked to have had her heart broken by the same guy, twice. Once alive, once dead.
“And… just so you know… I’m completely okay with people being different.” Was that the right wording to use? He wasn’t sure, but it seemed like it was the best wording. “I mean, Emma Jane’s still Emma Jane. As long as she doesn’t hurt people because of what she does, then there’s really nothing wrong with it. I know people have been pretty shortsighted about what it means to not be what we thought was human until two months ago, but I’m not one of those people, and I don’t want to be. Ever.”
