Taking Advice
Who: Claire and Madock
When: Morning
Where: Their house
It was strange waking up early and not having to actually get up and get ready for school. Claire lay in bed for awhile, trying to get used to the feeling of being done with high school. She listened to her mom get up and leave for work, and only after she heard her dad leave the house not too shortly after, Claire got up and took a shower before getting dressed in a pair of jeans and a tank top. Madock's door across the hallway was still shut, so she was assuming he was sleeping. Really, she was going to assume he would sleep at least until noon. She needed to invite him to Charlie's pool party, if he hadn't already been invited. But she figured if he had been, then he would have told her about it before now. With that thought, Claire sighed and opened her dresser drawers, digging through the mess until she found her swim suits buried at the bottom, beneath her socks. She pulled both of them out and threw them on the bed before she stood, her hands on her hips, and stared at them both. They were both bikinis, which meant she must have been temporarily insane when she bought them. She didn't want to put either of them on, and she didn't want to have to swim. But she'd promised Gabe, so she was kind of stuck.
It didn't take very long before Claire got irritated and gave up trying to choose which one would be less embarrassing. So she left them behind in her room and headed out to the kitchen to make herself breakfast. Since there was no school, she didn't need to rush with cereal or pop tarts. She actually had time to eat breakfast today, which meant eggs and bacon. She decided to make a bit extra, since she was thinking - and hoping - that the smell of food would rouse Madock from bed.
Madock, if he was normal, would have still been sleeping. Of course, no one ever accursed Madock of being normal. He didn't have school that day, but he went out for a morning run either way. He got to run longer today because he didn't have to be back inside for a shower. By the time he got home, he could smell the food from the front door. "Mom?" he questioned, assuming that Claire was still asleep. He strode into the kitchen and leaned against the door and chuckled lightly. "Well, miss Claire, what's the occasion?"
Claire was so lost in thought as she scrambled the eggs that she didn't hear the front door open. She did, however, heard Madock call for their mom and she jumped a bit, spatula clattering from her hand to the floor. Cursing, she bent down to pick it up and wash it off in the sink. Turning, she smiled at Madock and realized he hadn't been sleeping - but he'd been out running it looked like. "Hey. Uh, duh! No school today. That seems like a good enough reason to make something better than pop tarts, right? Did you go running?"
"I always go running." he told her. "It'll take forever for me to get used to the fact that I can sleep in." He brushed a hand through sweat-damp hair and scrunched his nose. "God, I need a shower." he muttered, mostly to himself, quickly putting his arm back down. "Totally need a shower." he repeated. "How long before breakfast is done?" he questioned. "I got like... ten minutes to get non-funktified?"
"I should try and get up to go with you," Claire said, glancing down at herself before she went back to the breakfast. Maybe if she ran every morning, she wouldn't be dreading a stupid pool. "Ten minutes is a very good estimate. I'll cook as slow as I possibly can," she promised with a grin over her shoulder. "So hurry up... you're stinky."
"Shut up." he said, more about what she'd said about herself than what she'd said about him. He knew that he didn't smell very appealing, but he hated when Claire said things that made it seem like she thought she was fat. And she wasn't fat. Not in his eyes. Probably not in anyone else's eyes either. Either way he headed for the bathroom and into the shower, returning about ten minutes later in a pair of cargo shorts. His boxers showing just a bit around the waistline. "I love summer because I really don't have to wear a shirt." he grinned.
Claire rolled her eyes when he told her to shut up, and didn't say anything before he disappeared to the bathroom. She was sliding the bacon onto his plate when he returned and she glanced over at him, unable to resist rolling her eyes this time. "Yeah, we're all so stoked about that." Claire lifted her plate and handed it to him. "Speaking of shirts... or rather, non-shirts, Charlotte is having a pool party thing today around three and you're invited."
"Today?" he grinned. His brain already working around the fact that Charlotte meant Ransom would be there and Ransom meant that Jessalyn was totally allowed to come which meant that he could invite her to go with him. "Awesome. I'm totally going and I'll invite Jessalyn to go to." he said with a little grin. "You going with Gabe?" he questioned, though he was already fairly certain of the answer to that. "I might go see what he's up to this morning. Kill some time before I call Jessalyn. She's got school today so I gotta wait to text her til about lunchtime. Don't wanna get her in trouble."
"Yes today, and yes, Gabe's going to drive me over," Claire told him, walking with her own plate to sit at the kitchen table. Being driven over was a lot different than going with him. Sort of. "I imagine Jessalyn might already be going, since I'm sure Ransom will be there." Claire grinned up at her brother. "But I think it would be super cute if you guys went together." Madock had a girlfriend now, or a girl, or whatever he was going to call her, so Claire felt she was allowed to tease a bit. "You're going to go over to Gabe's?" she asked as an almost afterthought.
"I might. Just to see what he's up to." he nodded, setting his plate on the table and sinking down into his chair. "Am I not allowed to talk to him alone?" he teased. He noted how she turned 'going with Gabe' into 'he's driving me over'. It irked him a bit, but he didn't say anything. "And since when is it 'super cute' for me to go with a girl? I think you're almost as excited about Jessalyn Weiss as I am." he teased.
"You can talk to him alone," Claire said, sticking her tongue out before she took a bite of eggs. "You're his friend too... I don't have claim on Gabe's free time or anything. And it's always super cute when you do anything with a girl. I'm your sister, I'm suppose to say things like that. And I am excited about Jessalyn Weiss, because she's not a skanky bitch."
Madock rolled his eyes a little at her comment about being his sister. "Yeah, yeah, whatever." he said. I don't think there's anything cute about it." Hot maybe. Sexy, definitely, but not cute. Well, okay, maybe just a little cute because Jessa was adorable and... Stop it. Focus. Breakfast with the sister damn it. "Where's mom and Satan?" he questioned.
Claire snickered at Madock's nickname for their dad before biting into her bacon. "Work. Mom should be home around one though. And I think there's plenty cute about you liking Jessalyn. I'll get to see you two in action at Charlie's. She's going to be in a swim suit and all wet and dripping." Claire shot Madock a teasing smile. "Think you'll be able to control yourself?"
Madock bit his bottom lip at that image, swallowing down air before he could get his voice to respond enough that he could form a coherent sentence. "Fuck you." he said simply. "I'll be able to control myself just fine. That's why there are pools to go along with those bikini's and bathing suits. Cold water will help me out a lot tonight. Thank god." he said. "Might have to leave early though and go have some fun of my own with her." he smirked. "Maybe... if she wants to I mean."
Bursting into laughter, Claire shook her head at Madock. She was thoroughly amused that her brother was so worried about this stuff. He'd never acted so doofy before. And it was super cute. "I'm sure she'll want to. If she was willing to do stuff on the first date? I don't think you have anything to worry about there." She snorted and took a sip of the water she'd poured herself. "I think I'll have to have a chat with her myself today. Make sure that her intentions are pure toward my brother. Or at least decent."
"You wouldn't dare." he said, eyes flicking up to catch his sister's as he chomped on a piece of bacon. "You're not going to embarrass the hell out of me. I'll so chuck your butt into the pool if you even think of letting out one tiny little embarrassing detail of the last eighteen years of my life. Got me?" Not that his threat had any real malice to it. He doubted that Claire would do anything to embarrass him in front of the girl he liked, but he had to at least pretend to be annoyed.
"Please, Gabe's already put claim to tossing my butt into the pool, so you'll have to figure out something else. And it's not like I would embarrass you. I would just talk to her in a casual manner to see what she really thinks of you." Claire smiled brightly. "I just want to look out for my baby brother. No embarrassing stories, no probing questions. I promise."
"Fine, you can talk to her, but you gotta promise to tell me everything she says about me. Good or bad." he said. "Deal?" It might not be so bad after all to have Claire talk to Jessalyn. He'd have a little spy of sorts without really spying. He could get more details, and figure out what Jessalyn really thought of him. If she really liked him and all that. Yes, Claire talking to Jessalyn was a good idea.
Laughing again, Claire nodded. She wondered what all of his jock friends would say about Madock now. "Yes, I'll tell you every single detail, dear brother. Wow, one date you're whipped." She shook her head and shoved her fork into her eggs. "You poor, poor bastard."
"Am not." he said immediately. "I'm nowhere near being whipped. I haven't even called her since the date." he pointed out. Of course that didn't mean that he didn't want to call her as soon as he woke up this morning. Hell, he'd wanted to call her last night as soon as he'd dropped her back off at her house. But being a boy and being too proud for his own good, he refused to admit that now.
"Dude, you didn't call her because you were afraid of being clingy, remember? You're so whipped." Claire shook her head. "It's not a bad thing, is it? You just really like her. Embrace it, Madock, and have fun this summer. You don't have to sit around the cafeteria table anymore and tell all your jock idiot friends what a great lay she is. You can actually enjoy her company one on one without the stupid high school crap that comes with it. I'm totally encouraging that."
"I wouldn't have done that." he told her. "Even if I wasn't graduating, I don't talk about how great a lay anyone is. I just don't say anything at all. People talk and I don't bother with correcting them. But that's not the point anyway. I do really like her..." he admitted. "And I don't want to be clingy, but being whipped sounds almost as bad."
"That's only because being whipped has a bad rep," Claire pointed out, not wanting him to start internally freaking out because he liked this girl. "And you know, not correcting people is almost as bad as saying something yourself. But believe me, Madock, you're not being clingy, okay? Clingy to me is being like, unnecessarily needy and almost stalkerish. Which you aren't."
Madock frowned a little as he started in on his eggs. "Yeah." he agreed. "But I didn't start the shit, half the time the girls I went out with said that they fucked me. I'm just supposed to call them out on it? Be like, 'sorry ladies, I'm a virgin, you totally didn't bang me'... yeah, that would have gone over real well." It would have embarrassed the hell out of him, but it wouldn't have changed much else. At least he didn't think it would. "I don't think I could be stalkerish. Just don't have it in me to be a stalker."
"I know you don't, which is why I'm saying you're not being clingy just because you want to spend time with her. A lot of new relationships feel that way. It's exciting, the feelings you're having, and you want to just... go with it. Which means spending a lot of time together until you get comfortable enough that you can be together and still maintain some independence." Claire arched an eyebrow, a smile playing at her lips. "See how I can pretend to know what I'm talking about? Not too bad, huh?" She'd heared a couple girls at school gossiping about how Madock was in bed. It was a relief to know they were full of shit. She didn't like half the girls Madock hung around anyway.
"I think you need to use that relationship advice on yourself, sis." he said with a little smile. "Think about the people that you can actually spend more than five seconds around that have a dick and aren't me and see who's on that list. Then you should go after one of 'em." he smiled, knowing all to well that the list would consist of Gabe alone most likely.
Claire's gaze narrowed in his direction. "Why is it whenever we talk about your love life, you bring up Gabe?" Because she knew that's who he was talking about. It was like all of her denials and protests about being with Gabe romantically went in one ear and out the other.
"I'm not even talking about Gabe." he lied, shaking his head and managing to keep a straight face. "There isn't a single other guy that you can talk to for more than a few minutes besides him? Damn, you need to get out more."
"You're such a liar," Claire muttered, standing up from the table to carry her plate of half eaten food to the sink. "There are other guys I can talk to that aren't you and Gabe. And if you want me to prove it, then I will." Surely there would be boys at Charlie's pool party that weren't Gabe or Madock. She could talk to one of them, right? "I mean, you're right." She shrugged and started scraping her food off into the garbage disposal. "I really need to get out more. So... I will."
Madock frowned a little at his plate and shook his head just a bit as he finished off the food it contained. "I know you can talk to other guys." he said, rolling his eyes. "I just hate seeing you sitting around all the time and when you do go out, it's with Gabe as friends or whatever. You need to get laid or something, maybe you wouldn't be such a pain in my ass." he teased, swallowing the last of his bacon and taking his clean plate to the kitchen sink. "God, women."
"Remember when I told you about getting laid and you threatened to kick some ass? Maybe I do need to get laid. But that would require talking to a guy first. Which I fully intend to do." She stuck her tongue out at him and grabbed his plate to rinse it off before putting it in the dishwasher. "I mean, you're right. You and Gabe are the only two guys I ever go out with, and you're my brother, and he's my best friend. That's pretty sad on my part, I think. Maybe Charlie will have invited some cute guys to her party." Blech. She really wasn't into the whole dating thing, but Madock was right. She needed to get out more.
"Fact is, you're going to fuck whether I want you to or not. I'm your brother, not the pussy police." he said, scrunching his nose at the thought of his sister having sex at all. "But that's not the point." he said, shaking his head. "I don't think you need to talk to random guys just because I think you need to get out more. I don't mind that you spend a lot of time with Gabe, actually, I'd prefer it because at least he's not a dick. I just don't want you having a shitty summer because you spend the whole thing talking to random fuckers who aren't worth your time, seriously." He couldn't help but think that none of those things had anything to do with anything she'd said, but that was typical with Madock and he just shook his head and let it go.
"Ugh, do not say pussy," Claire said, shutting the dishwasher and turning to face him. "The whole point of getting out more is to meet new people. Clearly, I need to meet new people. I can't hog all your time this summer, not with Jessalyn in the picture. And I can't hog all of Gabe's free time either. I won't have a shitty summer. Maybe I'll find a really nice guy that you actually like." Claire smiled. "Don't worry about me. I'm just taking your advice, after all. Or rather, my own advice."
"Whoa, whoa." he said, shaking his head and leaning back against the counter, folding his arms across his chest. "I had nothing to do with this. It's not my advice, so don't blame it on me. Especially when Gabe gets totally bored because you're out with your new random guy that you may or may not really like, alright?"
"You totally had something to do with this," Claire countered. "You're the one who said I needed to get out more. You're the one who said there isn't another guy besides you and Gabe that I can talk to for more than a few minutes. Besides, Gabe isn't going to get bored. He has plenty of other friends that aren't me." She really didn't think she had it in her to just go up to some random guy and start chatting him up. But her brother was trying to be clever about disguising his comment about Gabe, so she was doing her best to twist it around on him.
"I was trying to get you to go for it with Gabe, duh." he said, rolling his eyes. "I didn't really want you to go out and hang with other people... I was just being a smart ass and since when do you ever listen to me?" he questioned, arching a brow at her. "Hardly ever. The one time you do listen to me is the one time I don't want you to."
She shook her head and leaned back against the counter before shooting him a look. "I always listen to you," Claire said. "But only when you make sense. And I know you were being a smart ass. Duh." She pushed away from the counter to start back toward her room to continue her internal swim suit debate. "Have fun with Gabe when you go over."
Madock sighed. "I will." he said. "I'll see you at the party, Claire." he muttered, heading for his room to grab a tank top and head on over to Gabe's. Hopefully he'd be a little less girly and aggravating than Claire.
