WHO: Amanda Blake and Cameron Calvert
WHERE Their home
WHAT: Discussing Demons, Wedding dates and those three words, eight letters.
WHEN: Morning
The previous day had been absolutely awful. From the moment he got to work, Cameron had heard nothing but stories about what was going on out in the world. Attacks from monstrous creatures that were hurting and killing anything they came across, not distinguishing between human and supernatural. There wasn't a whole lot that actually scared the man, he preferred to hate things he didn't understand, but the idea that there were things out there that just didn't give a damn... a cold thread of fear had curled up in his stomach and he had called Amanda the first moment he could along with everyone else he knew, making sure that nothing had happened to any of them.
Laying in bed beside a still-sleeping Amanda, staring at her like he realized he hardly ever did, Cameron felt that same thread of fear stir up again. He couldn't let anything happen to her, and he had no doubts that today was going to be no better than yesterday. It always took time for natural crises to calm and be contained, this wouldn't be an exception. And if she left then he couldn't make sure that she was safe... she wouldn't like it. Oh no, his blonde would probably fight tooth and nail over being kept inside of the house, but Cameron had made his mind up. Snaking an arm out to slide around her, he leaned in to kiss her forehead. "Time to wake up, beautiful." She had said something the other day about him not always needing to wake her up after his shower after all. No harm in listening occasionally.
Amanda was sleeping rather soundly, likely due to the Valium she popped sometime around three a.m. in order to quiet her mind after the events of the previous day. It had felt like the end of the world was truly coming, maybe it still was, if demons attacking people on the streets didn't signify the end of the world, what did? They'd said the Light of May had been the beginning of the end and this was proof. Amanda felt robbed. Robbed of the life she had so diligently planned out, the bright career she'd only just begun, the big perfect wedding that they hadn't even set a date for yet, the family she and Cameron were meant to have, was it all going to be gone --poof-- just like that? It all wasn't fair, and in Amanda's mind, it was all their faults, those supernatural plagues on the planet. Somehow, some way, they had brought about the end of all good and right in the world.
The little blue pill had allowed her to drift into unconsciousness, along with a little help from the half bottle of Merlot she'd practically downed between the time she'd gotten home and Cameron had made it safely through the front door. If she had lost him... well, suffice to say she wouldn't have stopped at one tranquilizer. Amanda wasn't the exactly a clinging vine, but she had been last night, she might be for quite some time to come.
Amanda stirred, slowly coming to from the drug and alcohol induced slumber. Maybe it was all a bad dream? Was her first thought as her hazel eyes met his blue-gray pools, a slow lazy smile curling at the corner of her lips. They were still alive, for now, best to just enjoy life while it lasted. "God... I had the worst dream ever..." she breathed out, settling herself in against her fiancee'.
Cameron frowned a little at what Amanda said when she woke up. He had been sure that she'd slept somewhat well, having never once woken from his own sleep, but then again he was a deep sleeper. Still, he didn't want Amanda to sleep poorly, and not only because her hazel eyes might be tainted pink from lack of restful sleep. "Tell me about it," he encouraged, trailing his fingers through her hair, unconsciously undoing any knots that sleeping had left. He never talked about his own dreams if he could get away with it, especially the ones that had plagued him since the supernaturals had decided that they belonged out in the light with the rest of the world. That would be just one more problem and with both of them working rather demanding jobs he didn't think that there needed to be any other things adding on top of it all. Especially if the Society actually steps up its game... Cameron himself had every intention of seeing it done, especially now that demons had brought themselves out of the woodwork.
Amanda was groggy, she'd be blaming the alcohol later when the headache started banging, but for now her usually quick firing brain was taking a few moments to kick start and the realization that the 'dream' likely hadn't been a dream at all. "Only now I'm not so sure it was a dream, how much did I drink last night?" she frowned, furrowing her brow. "The demon attacks really happened, didn't they?" Oh to have that drug and alcohol induced ignorance back. Amanda rolled on to her back and sat up, rubbing her temples slowly. "I want to believe demons attacking and killing people on the streets of Scarlet Oak was all a sleep induced hallucination of my sleeping brain... but it's not, is it?" she paused, looking to her fiancee' for some form of reassurance of something, not quite cognizant of what exactly she needed reassured.
"No idea how much you drank. And sadly, no, it's very real," Cameron informed Amanda as she slowly woke up, she must've taken sleeping pills, glancing up at her from where he was still lying. "Demons are out there killing people and making supernaturals actually look like they don't need to be worried about." Not that he believed anything of the sort for even a minute. He knew where the real danger lay and it wasn't with something that had just showed up to rampage the world. No, it was in the reason behind their appearance and he felt down in his bones that it was because of the supernaturals. Because they flaunted themselves so thoughtlessly. If not for them... Cameron felt his jaw clench just thinking about them. "I was thinking it might be... safer if you didn't go out today. Work from home just this once." He didn't think for a minute that she was going to take well to the suggestion and was ready for the explosion.
"That's what I was afraid of, it's probably a mad house down at City Hall." Amanda responded, sitting all the way up, legs dangling over the side of the bed as she tried to summon the will to get up and go about the normal routine. Normal. Well that was a thing of the past now wasn't it? Nothing had been normal since May, really every bad thing that had happened in the recent months kept coming back to that goddamn day in May. What was next? "Cameron, no. I can not work from home, and you know that. The Mayor is going to expect me to help spin this shit to help calm the public..." She responded, getting up; moving for the closet obviously with intent to go about the norm nonetheless. "Calm the public, as if, what they really need is to be riled up enough to actually do something about the heart of the problem before it's too damn late. If it's not already..."
There was what Cameron had expected, disagreement and Amanda going to get dressed like any other day. If he hadn't lain awake thinking about it or made any of the phonecalls he had last night before returning home, he'd probably be doing the same thing. Was still tempted to, but he knew about chance he had of convincing Amanda to stay probably relayed on him staying too. "If I can, you can," he informed her as he slid out of bed and walked up behind her, arms going around her waist. "It's not like I want to keep you from your job, it's just not safe out there, Amanda. Give it a few days to settle back down... and then we can rile all the humans, I promise there's something coming." He smiled at the thought of a speech that would make the humans of Scarlet Oak see the problem. If only his father would agree that it was time for it to happen. "The mayor will be fine. You might not be." He didn't have to say it out loud, that he couldn't stand the idea of losing her now. Not after all the time it had taken to actually find out how much he cared.
It was going to take some convincing, his arms around her like that was definitely a good start, if she wasn't a stubborn woman that would have been enough for her to relent. It did, however, make her pause for a moment to try and regain her own stubborn will. "It's my job to be the little angel on the Mayor's shoulder whispering all the right words into his ear, I can't exactly help him field the press from home, now can I?" Amanda insisted, sure there was a team of public relations lawyers and many with years more experience than she, but Amanda was quite ambitious and intended to milk even this to further her career as well as their cause. "Days? You can't be serious, Cam..." she sighed, leaning back against him, it wasn't Cameron she was upset at, she had to remind herself of that. The fact that he was so adamant that she not go in to work spoke volumes about his deep concern and feelings for her. "Just today... that's all I can promise, if the Mayor doesn't insist I come in. Okay?"
"You know that he has a plethora of people ready to write his speeches," Cameron said. All politicians did, and usually they ended up with multiple drafts before one was chosen, or blended with others, to make it perfect. If it wasn't for all of those people then most politicians probably wouldn't have made it out of whatever business they had started in. Too bad the public didn't really seem to notice how true that was. If he was ever in a position of power, and oh he would be, Cameron knew he'd do his best to write his own. They were always more passionate. "You might be the angel and the best... but you're my fiance, none of those others safety matter to me." He had won, he could tell by how she leaned into him. It made a wave of relief run through him to know that she would stay with him in their house. For some reason his mind said that their house was safe if they just didn't go out. "Thanks, Mandy." He smiled, kissing the top of her head and pulling her closer. Already today looked like it would be better than yesterday, no worrying about what was happening to Amanda.
"I know, you're right." she relented. He had won this one, oddly enough Amanda wasn't upset about that for once. It kind of felt good to hear him verbalize his concern for her, more than kind of, it felt really good. Amanda had gotten quite good at compartmentalizing her emotions, especially where Cameron was concerned, mostly due to the fact that her feelings for him were so intensely powerful that they might be a bit too overwhelming for her fiancee', but that box was open at that moment. "You're Welcome, Cam." she responded softly, turning around to face him, wrapping her arms around the back of his neck. "I want to set the date, Cameron." Amanda announced, biting her lip. "If the world is coming to a screeching halt, I want to share your name before it's all over."
Whatever Cameron had expected, whatever he'd thought that Amanda would bring up as a fair exchange to staying at home to ease his fears, this definitely wasn't it. He'd expected a demand to go back to bed, maybe, or share that shower she'd mentioned earlier in the week... not being told that she wanted to know the date for their wedding. Now that was something that he hadn't given as much thought as he probably should of, happy to leave the detail to Amanda, her mother and his mother. They seemed so much more excited about planning it all and his father had as much as said that it was woman's work. Setting the date, though, that wasn't woman's work, that was for both of them and he had been able to skate around it. "Demons everywhere and you're worried about marrying me?" he asked, trying to find it amusing and failing. It was actually sort of sweet and what was he going to do, deny her? Not when she was biting her lip like that. "Not that it won't be nice to call you Mrs. Cameron Calvert. When did you have in mind?"
Amanda had half expected him to balk and try and steer the conversation away from pending nuptials, maybe more than half expected it in elall honesty. While she knew they were in love and that Cameron wasn't going to run off with some cheap slut or bang his paralegal, that the wild oats had already been well sewn in college (as much as the thought made her queasy, but she hadn't exactly been celibate herself when they were off again.), and that he'd proposed marriage in the first place-- But up 'til now, whenever the topic turned to pinning down a date... "Yes, Demons everywhere and it just made me take pause... what if we don't have much time left? I don't want to waste it." She stated. "I love you, and yes, I know that you love me and I don't need a ring and a legally binding contract to know that, but damn it, I want it. And immediately..."
Cameron didn't think that they were wasting their time. Both of them had jobs that could allow them influence, they had each other and (if his plans worked) they would have quite an effect on that blasted supernatural population as well. And Amanda wanted to get married now? Cameron licked his lips and glanced away for a moment. His mother would be oh-so-delighted, just like Amanda's, and his father would probably even be pleased. At least Amanda remembered his typical comebacks for why they didn't need a date or any of that. It was all just legal proceedings anyhow, no one understood that better than them. But Amanda wants it. "Immediately, Amanda?" he couldn't help but say that, it seemed so rushed. "As in soon." Sighing and pulling one of his hands away from her waist, Cameron ran his fingers through his hair. "If we don't give our mothers enough time to go through all the proper proceedings, they'll have fits at both of us." Was he giving in? No, this was not giving in, this was something that he wanted. Just a little, okay a lot, quicker.
"Yes, as in in the immediate future. And they've been planning it for years, Cam." Hell, in truth they'd been planning it since the pair were in diapers, but in actual planning and preparation, it was as planned as it possibly could be without an actual date having been set. "They just need a date, it's all a matter of dress fittings for myself and the girls... the inviting guests, booking the church and reception locations... it's all been planned to death." she explained, not backing down or even taking a step back. "The only thing stopping it from actually all coming together and happening... is, well, you." she added pointedly, watching him closely. Amanda was well aware of all of Cameron's comebacks and excuses of the past, but in the past Demons hadn't been appearing and murdering people on the streets, he had a plan of action, sure, that was all well and good. She had no doubts about his commitment to furthering the goals of the cause, she was, however, box of emotions open as it were, starting to doubt his intentions to put that band of gold, or platinum as it would be expected to be, on her finger and keep that promise of forever.
Amanda sighed and stood up straight, pulling herself from his now partial embrace. "I'm going to take a shower," she announced, turning on heel marching toward the bathroom. She was starting to feel too tense and a tense Amanda was not a happy or pleasant Amanda.
Ouch, well, that stung a little bit, Cam couldn't lie to himself about that. Watching Amanda he saw her tensing and realized, not for the first time but perhaps for the most important time, that this was a really big deal to her. Way more important than it was to him. Damnit. Now she was upset, having pulled away from him and everything. Cameron just stood there for a minute, watching her walk away, before sighing and rubbing at his eyes. It would've been so much simpler to just let her go to work. But then he'd have worried the entire day and gotten nothing done and something could've happened... damnit again. Cursing silently to himself, or at himself, Cameron walked into the bathroom behind her.
"Well, how long will those things take?" he asked, leaning against the doorframe and reaching out to catch her hand, pulling her back to him. "Because I want to make you happy, and I do want to prove to the world what you already know. That takes a wedding, so I'm marrying you. Not just because I have to, but because I want to, okay?" That was a little more than he was used to talking about the subject. "So come on, Amanda, marry me soon as we can without ruining any of our mother's plans."
It was expected that it would sting a little, as it should. Amanda was nothing if not blunt and pointed, sometimes that's what it took to get Cameron to really hear her and take it to heart. She was demanding with others to a fault, and yet with Cameron she had learned the fine art of give and take to make a relationship last. Up until this point she hadn't put her foot down about the whole issue of marriage, but it really, truly was that important to her. That silly little legal document binding them together, the hyphen that would link her name with his, the white dress, the twelve bride's maids, the exchanging of vows and rings, those seven words the officiant would say at the end of the ceremony... she'd always wanted it, but now she needed it, even if the timing was insane-- even if it seemed so stupid and inconsequential, that didn't change the fact that it needed to happen.
"Maybe a week, two tops..." He caught her hand and she really didn't put up much fight when he pulled her back to him, and quite glad of it with the words he spoke. It took her a moment to process, but once it sunk in she kissed him, not a soft safe kiss as was the typical morning fair, oh no, it was a forceful, passionate kiss conveying emotions she for once didn't have words for. "I love you..." she breathed against his mouth, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. This was really going to happen. Finally.
Two weeks. In two weeks tops he would be a married man because that was what was going to make Amanda happy, and that in turn meant that he was going to be happy. Cameron knew that, so he swallowed his doubts and gladly accepted the kiss she had for him. Shocking, though, was just how passionate it was, stealing his breath away and sending heat flashing through his body and his grip on her tightened slightly. The words he expected, they no longer caused him to tense as they once had, and he smiled against her mouth, stroking his hand up along her side. He rarely said it, didn't feel the need since she was fully aware of how he felt, but he sensed right then that she not only needed him to marry her, she needed to hear what he felt. "I love you too," he murmured, hands sliding all the way up to cup her face as he smiled at her, kissing her every bit as hard as she had him.
She did need to hear it, not all the time, but in times where the world made completely no sense whatsoever... those three words, eight letters helped ground her and gave her something to hold on to. Add to that his body didn't go stiff as a board when he uttered them, he was actually calm and in the moment right along with her, and that in and of itself was rather spectacular in and of itself. In the span of two weeks they'd be married, Amanda would be a wife and their personal life, for the time being, would be complete. She only hoped the world didn't come crashing down before then, but even if it did... she at least knew now, more than ever that Cameron loved her and she could be content in that if these were the final days.
His kiss in return too stole her very breath away, any and all emotional boxes labeled 'Cameron' opened right up with that kiss. She pressed into him, arms circling around the back of his neck as she returned the kiss fervently, breaking only for the tiniest moment to take in a quick breath and murmur against his mouth. "Up for that shower this morning?"
Yes, this was the morning that Cameron'd had in mind when he asked Amanda to stay. Distracting her with something like that was what he'd wanted, but the wedding was also a fair trade. But it was easy to forget about that with her next kiss and what she said. "I think I am," he chuckled, one hand sliding up to help pull off her chemise. It'd been awhile since they'd actually had the time to do something like that with both of them as busy as they were, and Amanda had seemed to like the idea so much when she came up with it... okay, so did he. He was actually really liking this idea the more he thought about it, his heartbeat picking up. "Come on, let's get you in there."
