Introductions Who: Domina and Kayla When: Evening! Where: Moriarty place!
Kayla was no stranger to charity functions, growing up in the sort of family she had, but she had certainly been surprised when Bram Moriarty casually handed out around three hundred thousand dollars to the teenagers who'd been kidnapped. It was quite a generous gesture, but she had to wonder if it was entirely altruistic. There were, after all, quite a few reporters around. But then again, so many times charity functions were used primarily as places to be seen, opportunities to bolster one's reputation. Her mother, head of so many charities herself, hadn't hesitated before accepting the family's invitation.
Kayla had disdained wearing a longer dress, going for more of a cocktail look - and she was pushing the limit a little on that, but she was planning on meeting some friends in downtown Ann Arbor at a club later that night, and it was more convenient if she didn't have to stop and change in between. So she'd found an adorable little cocktail party dress, a short, strapless little navy satin number with a bow on her left hip. She left her hair loose and curling, wearing simple silver hoops and a diamond bracelet, and finishing the whole look off with the favorite trick of short girls everywhere - nude-colored heels designed to make her legs look longer.
Kayla had managed to finagle a glass of champagne from a server, mostly by taking it off a tray as it circulated and daring anyone to say no, but either they didn't care or she passed muster so far. She'd just finished a rather animated conversation with an old friend who happened to be in attendance. Saying goodbye with a laugh and an air kiss, Kayla headed off in search of someone else to chat with.
Domina had been quietly trailing Galen's actions - and the quietly had been no easy thing, considering how many times she wanted to throw her head back and howl in laughter. She was still playing the sweet Moriarty daughter, but as the night went on she wasn't worrying so much about greeting every last person who looked her way. When the girl in the navy dress crossed her path, she might have said nothing at all - if it weren't for the fact that the girl's scent was so alarmingly new. She'd never experienced anything like it before - especially considering the girl smelled so damned human. Interest immediately snagged, Domina stopped and smiled brightly.
"That's a beautiful dress," she said, all the while really thinking, who the hell are you?
Kayla favored the dark-haired girl who'd stopped in front of her with a bright smile of her own. She couldn't help it; it was her natural expression, and this was a party, after all. "Thanks!" she said brightly. "Can you believe I found it in a little boutique in Ann Arbor? I love this area, don't get me wrong - I grew up here - but the shopping is definitely less than ideal. I usually have to hop over to Chicago or New York." Not that she ever minded much; she loved the big cities. "I love yours, too," she added. "That red is stunning. I'd love to wear more red, but too much and it starts making me look orange-y and totally unattractively flushed." She didn't recognize the girl, so she was either new to town or she wasn't local - Kayla was pretty active in the community and familiar with just about all her peers in Scarlet Oak.
Jesus, she was a talker. Domina usually didn't do well with bubbly. Bubbly got on her nerves. In this case, it wasn't so bad. Gave her time to try and figure out that damned scent. She had to be human. Had to be. But what the hell was it? "You might have to tell me where, then," she said, grinning. "I myself am still doing my shopping out of state. But I've only been here a few weeks. The blue suits you, truly."
"I don't know," Kayla said with a laugh. "I might need to keep it a secret." She was joking, of course; shopping was never half as fun as it was with friends. And she was the type who hadn't yet met someone who wasn't a friend. She beamed at the compliment. "Thanks, that's so sweet of you to say." She held out a hand to shake. "I'm Kayla," she introduced. "Kayla Chao. Are you visiting Scarlet Oak or have you moved?"
Of course. The little unknown bitch didn't know who she was. Domina continued to smile as she imagined popping out one of her eyeballs. "Domina Moriarty," she introduced herself, pleasantly shaking Kayla's hand. "We just moved here a little bit ago. I'm glad our first party seems to be such a success! Do you know my father?"
"Oh!" Kayla exclaimed as they shook hands. "No, I don't know him personally, but of course I know of him. Your family's just moved here very recently, haven't you?" She thought she remembered hearing something about it being within the last couple of weeks. "It's a great party," she agreed, even though she didn't think she'd be staying much longer. There was only so much fun one could have under adult supervision. Which prompted her to issue her invitation. "I'm heading out after this to meet a few friends in Ann Arbor, maybe go to a few clubs. You're welcome to come if you like."
"Oh, I wish I could!" Domina gushed, and that wasn't actually a complete lie. She needed to know this girl's story. Domina was a nosy, know-it-all bitch - and one not used to coming across scents she couldn't place. There was no chance she'd just let this rest. She would find out, one way or another. "If I left tonight Daddy would just kill me. Maybe I could take a raincheck? I don't know anyone in the area, and I'd love to learn the hotspots from a local."
"Well, we'll probably be out super late," Kayla said with a laugh. "Let me see your phone." She took the proffered device and programmed her number into it, then called herself long enough for Domina's number to register on her own phone. "There," she said, handing it back over. "Whenever you're allowed to jump ship here, give me a call. If we're still out, you'll totally have to come meet us. If not, I'll definitely call you next time we go out." Which, since it was summer, was usually each weekend.
Gods, I am so damned productive tonight. I need a fucking medal. Domina smiled brightly and put her phone back in her clutch. "Excellent, I absolutely will. Can't wait," Again, not entirely a lie for a change. She had so many projects! All of them just falling into her lap! The suspense would almost be enough to keep her up at night. Almost.
"Me either," Kayla practically chirped, until movement from the corner caught her eye. "Oh hell, my mom's waving. Excuse me, I've got to go see what she wants or she'll probably keep waving until she dislocates something. It was great meeting you, Domina!"
"Great meeting you," Domina echoed, smiling brightly as she watched Kayla walk away. She had half a mind to track her mother later and see if the scent was hereditary. The night was proving to be excellent hunting, and she hadn't even had to make anyone bleed. Yet.
