Are You Bored Yet?
Who: Alejandro and Jovie
Where: Phone, and then Alejandro's place
When: Late afternoon
Life had been a bit hectic for Alejandro as of late-- as in, one of his co-workers had gone on vacation, and so he was picking up an afternoon shift, as well. Even if it cut into his sleeping time, and his couch potato time, and his flying time, and had required being out in the sun... he didn't even care. It was money. He actually had enough to replace his window, finally, plus with enough to make rent on the side, and though it didn't so much as touch his debt with Mr. Ramas, Mr. Ramas had told him on the phone not to worry about it. Which was a bit worrying in and of itself.
Today, though, his co-worker had come back, and Alejandro was at loose ends. He'd slept most of the day, but he couldn't sleep any more, and the television bored him now, so he was at loose ends.
Staring at his new window, newly curtained and double-paned now with that fancy weather stripping that was supposed to keep the weather out better, he had an idea. Jovie ought to be done with work by now, or nearly... and she owned her own business, she could just close if she felt like it.
If she wasn't bored with him, now that she knew his secret. After all, she hadn't called him, or stopped by, or anything.
One way to find out. He went to the phone and punched in her cell phone number.
Jovie was at work, though she was thinking of closing up shop soon. She'd had a productive morning, and after buying a few items from overseas, she was starting to get bored. Which was why she smirked and was thankful to see Alex's number appear on her phone. She hadn't heard from him in awhile, but she hadn't contacted him either so she couldn't really fault him for being elusive. Answering the call, she leaned against her counter and pushed her hair back behind her ear. "Hey, Alex."
"Hey." And there she was. He wasn't sure whether he ought to be surprised she remembered his name. "Long time no see. Boring now that you know the big secret, huh?" His tone was wry, joking, but he was pretty sure that was the case. Either that or it was some crazy competition thing. Or quite likely piece and parcel of both.
"Not boring," Jovie remarked flippantly, "just been busy, honey. Besides, if I'm remembering correctly, you haven't been by to see me either." Really, she just wanted to see how long she could go before she called him - or if he would call her first. Which she had. Small victories, she mused. "And I'm assuming you've grown bored now, which is why you're calling me."
"I have an excuse, honey," Alejandro shot back, though he was kind of relieved she didn't seem too bored with him.... He certainly wasn't bored with her. "I've been working double-shifts to pay for the damn window you broke." Well, and everything else. God, he hated being broke. "Even vampires gotta sleep, and that's about all I had time for." That actually took effort to say.
Snickering, Jovie shook her head at his snippy response. "Windows aren't that expensive, and if you had just been home, I wouldn't have lost my temper." It was clearly his fault. "So between work and sleep... have you found yourself a break now? Is that why you're calling?"
"Yeah, because it's my fault I didn't know you would randoly show up drunk on my doorstep at three in the morning," Alejandro countered dryly. "I take it it's my fault you can't control your temper, too, huh?" He rolled his eyes. "But yeah. Guy who went on vacation is back now, and I don't have more extra shifts to cover. So, break."
"I wasn't drunk," she shot back. "I was pleasantly buzzed and horny." There was a big difference. "But yes, it was your fault. And it's not like you don't have a temper of your own." Jovie pushed off of the counter and glanced at the door. Maybe it was time to close up. "So anyway, you've got a break. Which means you want to see me, right?"
What did his having a temper have to do with her losing hers? God, that woman could piss him off with her assumptions and arrogance. "You're pretty damn sure of yourself. For all you know, I'm bored with you." Though the fact that he'd called her probably made that a pretty stupid thought. He continued a bit less stupidly: "Maybe I just thought I should see if you were going to tell anyone."
She grinned and walked over to lock the front door and place the 'Closed' sign up. "You're not bored with me, Alex. And if you were worried about me telling people about your little problem, you wouldn't have waited this long to call me. Now do you want me to come over or not?" Why beat around the bush? He wanted to see her, and yes, she wanted to see him too.
Scrubbing a hand through his hair, Alejandro sighed noiselessly, and said, "All right, fine, I want you to come over." She won that round. At least now he didn't have to dance around the whole... not wanting to go out during the daytime thing. She'd understand. "Are you still at work?"
Feeling triumphant that she got him to admit it, Jovie turned away from the door to head into the back and grab her purse and jacket. "I'm just about to leave, lucky for you. I'll be over in a few minutes." She snapped her phone shut, hanging up on him in the process. She knew he couldn't go out in the daytime, which was just fine by her. That made him a little more vulnerable, which she enjoyed.
Alejandro shot the phone a glare when she hung up on him. "Bitch," he muttered under his breath, and went to go take a quick shower and change, so he was actually sorta-kinda presentable, instead of looking like he'd bummed around the house and slept all day. Hopefully she wouldn't try to kick in this window, while he was on his way to the door.
Jovie took her time getting to Alex's house. She didn't want to seem too overeager, after all. She ran a brush through her long hair, applied a bit more eye makeup and touched up her lipstick before she actually started her car and drove over. She knew she already looked good in a blue sundress, so she didn't need to run home and change. Parking in his driveway, she got out of the car and grabbed her purse before heading up to the door to knock. The window looked pretty good. Hopefully he wouldn't provoke her into breaking it again.
Luckily for both of them, and probably for the window, Alejandro was out of the shower by the time she got there. His hair was still wet, but he was dressed and not towel-wrapped. Not that he really expected to stay dressed for long, not with Jovie on the way, but at least he didn't look like he wasn't put-together enough. He came over and pulled the door open when she knocked, revealing the tightly-curtained but lamp-lit interior. It was still pretty messy, given he hadn't had a lot of time to pick it up before she got here, but it could've been worse. "Hey," he said, backing up a step to let her in.
Jovie stepped inside and walked over to set her purse down on the sofa. "Hey yourself." She smiled while her gaze drifted over him. "Nice to see you showered for me. I'm flattered." She woudln't have minded if he'd answered the door in a towel. It would have been a lot easier to take it off of him than clothes. But Jovie supposed undressing was half the fun.
Shrugging, shutting the door to shut out the light, Alejandro answered, "Better than being rumpled, I figure." Because he didn't really get stinky anymore. After all, he didn't sweat, produce oils, or anything. He just... got rumpled. Or sometimes bloody. And, of course, cold-- now he wasn't quite so cold.
"I don't mind it when you're rumpled, as long as you're clean," Jovie remarked with a smirk. She walked over to him when he shut the door and slipped her arms around his neck. "You know, I was beginning to think you didn't miss me, with how long it took you to finally call."
A little surprised by the immediate and obvious show of affection, Alejandro put his arms around her waist, back. "You could always have called me, you know." He was just glad he had a damn window and had managed to pay his rent on time, really. He could live without a sexy, aggrivating woman for a while, if he had the basics of life....
"I suppose I could have," Jovie replied. "But I had other things occupying my time. Not necessarily work and sleeping like you, but..." She trailed off with a grin. "Sorry about your window. I promise to leave you a generous tip the next time you serve me a drink."
Now she'd surprised him again. Apologizing? Seriously? He gave her a mock-wary look. "Who are you and what did you do with the arrogant bitch I was talking to on the phone?" He didn't mean it as an insult, really, and he was still holding her, so he obviously wasn't upset or anything.
Jovie laughed and ran her hands through Alex's damp hair. "What, I'm not allowed to apologize for breaking a window?" Even if it was his fault. And did it look like she was offering to pay for the window? Nope. It didn't bother her in the slightest that he'd called her a bitch. She had been called worse, and obviously if he really disliked her, he wouldn't have her in his home at the moment.
"You're allowed. It just wasn't expected." He ducked his head a little under her hands, liking the feel of them in his hair. First she bullied him into admitting what he actually wanted, told him it was his fault she'd broken his window, and then hung up on him-- and now she was apologizing for said window, being affectionate, and finger-combing his hair. God, she was confusing. "So what're your plans for the rest of the afternoon, huh?" Hopefully staying here.
"I like being unpredictable." Which was the God's honest truth. Besides, if she wanted to be affectionate for awhile, she was allowed to. Even if Alex wasn't exactly a 'teddy bear' kind of guy himself. "As for my plans for the afternoon," she continued with a grin. "They involve rolling around naked with you in your bed for awhile. Which is why I assume you wanted me to come over in the first place."
"Pretty much," Alejandro grinned, back-- fangily, because hey, it was nice to use the full force of his smile for once. Though it wasn't entirely why he'd called. It'd been a combination of bored, lonely, and wondering if she really had gotten bored with him. The rolling around in bed was really more of a perk in this situation. As exasperating as she was, he did kind of like her-- she was interesting, and a really damn good lay. "Should I start dragging you off in that direction? Or should I be a gentleman and offer you a drink? --Uh, all I got is water, though." And the last of his angel and fire elemental blood, which he had been hording, but he doubted she'd want those.
It also didn't bother her that their relationship - if you could even call it that - was more or less purely physical. He had no expectations of her, and she had none of him. She found him interesting, not only because she couldn't read his mind, but because he didn't take her bullshit. She respected a guy who could throw it back at her without even flinching. Not that she would ever admit that to him. Plus, the sex was pretty great. "If I wanted a gentleman, I wouldn't be here," Jovie said simply. She released his hair and took a step back before grabbing his hand to drag him to his bedroom herself.
"Hey, I can be a gentleman. On occasion. When I really want to be." Just not now, really, because the thought of Jovie in the bedroom was pretty much taking over now. Alejandro had to laugh, but he let himself be dragged.
Jovie wasn't entirely sure that was true. She couldn't imagine Alex being a gentleman to anyone, beyond maybe opening the door for a woman. But she led him into his bedroom without a word and got to undressing him, pleased at that point that he was sensitive and softhearted. Those kind of men drove her nuts, and not in a good way.
She didn't know what time it was by the time she rolled off of him and onto her back on his bed, but her body was sated and achy, so she knew it had been awhile. With the dimness of his house, she didn't even know if it was still bright outside. Pulling his sheet up over her body, she took a few moments to get her breath even again. Her blood was still pumping, but she wasn't sure that bothered Alex, if he could even tell. "Have you ever bitten someone during sex?" she asked, arching an eyebrow and turning her face to look at him.
Jovie was apparently scoring most of the points today, but at least this time he wasn't too pissed off about it. Maybe he was in a good mood. He stayed where he was, not needing to catch his breath-- and not even having to pretend; sure, part of him was still used to it, and expected it, but he could ignore and smother that part-- and watched her doing the breathless, recovery thing.
The question startled him, though, and he blinked at her. "Uh. No, not really. Nobody's ever known before. I've wanted to, though."
"You've wanted to bite them," Jovie repeated, rolling onto her side to bend her elbow and rest her head on her hand. "Just for purely sexual reasons? Or has it been more like wanting to kill them type biting? Did you ever feel like biting me?" Not that she would let him do it. Her blood was her blood thank you very much, but she was still curious.
Considering most of Alejandro's experience had been with the killing part, not the sexing part, he felt a little like he was floundering, trying to come up with some kind of explanation. Quite honestly, unless you counted the arousal from the messy murders well outside town, Jovie was the only person he'd really had sex with. "Well, yeah, sure. Of course I did." Referring to her last question. "I'm a vampire, Jovie, that's kinda what we do. And it'd probably hurt like a bitch, so you'd probably not get a lot of out it, sex-wise."
Her lips twitched into a small smirk. "I'm not asking you to bite me. I don't mind a little nip here and there during sex but I'd prefer it if you didn't break the skin." Some people probably got off on being bitten by a vampire - not Jovie. Ever. "How many people have you killed?" She was assuming he had. Unless he was a 'tortured soul', which was so very boring.
Some people might've. Alejandro had a hard time imagining someone who could enjoy what he did, but that didn't mean they weren't out there. And if she gave him permission-- well, he didn't know what he'd do, and he didn't really want to find out.
Her question, though, took him aback, and could he blush now, he probably would have. Instead, he pushed himself up onto his elbows, scowled at her, and asked defensively, "What makes you think I've killed anyone?"
She doubted she would ever give him permission to bite her. Jovie couldn't think of any reason why she would want blood and physical pain. "You're a vampire," Jovie reminded him, arching an eyebrow at his scowl. "And when I came over the other night, you were bloody. You either killed someone, or you're an extremely messy eater."
And she hadn't called the cops on him, when she made that assumption, so.... Alejandro scowled further, but he did answer, a little shortly, "Not that many. I haven't been this way for all that long...." Which implied that he could increase that number. And probably would. "Though a lot of that was from the wings, too. That's kind of messy."
"I noticed." She wouldn't call the cops on him. Jovie had never killed anyone, but she had inflicted damage, physical and emotional. She selled cursed jewelry after all, and enjoyed it. But a vampire needed blood to survive, didn't they? And not everyone was willing. "Just how long have you been this way?"
Looking somewhere between disgruntled and embarrassed, Alejandro answered shortly, "About a month and a half. Maybe two, by now, I wasn't keeping track of time too well for a while...." Mostly because everything kind of seemed to blur together, first with fear and anger, then with work.
"Stop scowling, honey, it's not flattering to a pretty face like yours." Jovie rolled over until she was on her stomach and could fold her arms under her head. "You're still young. Maybe you'll grow to feed without killing them... unless you enjoy killing, then... well, to each their own. As long as you don't get caught."
"That wouldn't bother you?" Alejandro asked, puzzled and actually a little weirded out by her apparent lack of interest in whether he'd kill anyone again. "Me being a total psycho murderer or something?" Not that he'd really figured out how to feed without killing, but then, he hadn't exactly tried, either.
"I think there's a difference between being psychotic and needing to survive. Do I like that you kill people? No. Am I going to turn you in for it? No." It wasn't that she wasn't interested. Jovie would prefer not to show up at Alex's house when he was covered in blood. She arched an eyebrow. "Are you a psycho murderer?"
He frowned at her again, stuck for how to answer. He finally just growled, "Hell, I don't know. How'm I supposed to know what part is psychotic and what part is just hungry vampire?" Angry vampire. Hateful vampire. Whatever. "I'm new at this. I don't think I am." But he did think he was fucked up somehow, whether or not "psychotic" was the word for it.
"That depends," Jovie replied simply. "Were you psychotic before you turned into a vampire? Did you kill people prior to that? If so, then you're probably just a psychotic murderer. If you didn't, then it's probably hungry vampire... young hungry vampire who's learning how all of this is supposed to work." Jovie closed her eyes briefly. "Personally, I don't believe I would ever sleep with a total psycho, so there must be some good in you."
Alejandro snorted at the idea of there being "good" in him. He was the undead. There was no good in that. "Well, I killed vampires before I was turned," he admitted, though without any shame. "But I don't think that's quite the same thing as being psycho." No, enjoying it was psycho, but he'd really rather not get into that. "So I guess you're safe."
She arched an eyebrow and stared at him before lifting her head off her folded arms to stare at him. And then she smiled, chuckling once. "You killed vampires... and now you are one. God, that's tragic. But it's good to know I'm safe. I'd hate to have to tussle with a big bad vampire." She was being sarcastic, of course, but she assumed he knew that.
Tragic was not really something Alejandro felt like being-- even if he kind of was, really-- and he made a face at her. "That's me," he said, matching her sarcasm and exceeding it. "The big, bad vampire. Ooooo." He wiggled his fingers at her. Even if he was probably pretty bad.
"I'm sure you're scary to some people," Jovie said with a smirk. "Not to me. Probably because I didn't think you were all that frightening before I knew what you were." She reached out to snatch his wiggling fingers. "You don't have to kill people, you know. Plenty of vampires get by with just feeding."
"Show me how to do that, and maybe I'll try it," Alejandro said, dryly and not entirely truthfully. He ought to, he knew that, but he just didn't think he was that strong of a person. The whole "being an undead monster" thing only compounded the problem, to his mind. Made him less likely to want to do what he ought to do.
"You should know how to do it," Jovie pointed out. "You bite, you drink, and you then you stop yourself before they die." If he didn't feel like stopping, that was his own business. But she didn't want to hear him whining about being psychotic, or a monster, if that's what he chose to be. "If you decide you don't feel like stopping, then that's your choice."
"Maybe." He'd like to see her try to stop, when they were screaming and crying and blood was getting everywhere, and it felt fucking good, and-- yeah, he was pretty psycho, all right. And always had been. Irritated and verging on depressed, he pulled his hand from hers and pushed up out of bed. He had work to get to. In an hour or so, anyhow.
Jovie watched him get up before she flopped back down onto the bed. She hated that she couldn't read his mind, but when he went all quiet on her was when she really hated it. "You don't have to sink into that morose, woe is me state, Alex. You are what you are. You can't help that anymore than I can help what I am. Maybe you don't despise yourself because of what you are, maybe you despise yourself because you like what you are." Maybe, maybe not. The only way to find out was to push buttons and get reactions. That's what Jovie did best.
Gritting his teeth a little, Alejandro asked, "Can we not psychoanalize the baby vampire, please?" He was trying to stay nice, here. And not wallow. Her continual talking about it wasn't helping at all. "I have work, and I'd rather not be in a piss-poor mood when I get there. I need the tips."
Jovie thought that response was very telling. "But you're just screaming to be psychoanalyzed." She paused and smiled. "Psychoanalyzed, get it?" Pushing herself up again, she slipped from the bed to try and find where her clothes got tossed. "So don't be in a piss poor mood, honey. You have nothing to be in a grouchy mood over."
Except he did. He had plenty to be grouchy about, really, if he thought about it. At the moment, the angel blood in the fridge was sounding pretty damn good. But that could wait until Jovie was gone. "Psychoanalyzed," he said with a short chuckle at her pun. "Yeah, all right. Cute." He supposed having Jovie making a vague attempt at cheering him up was worth something, and did make him smirk a bit at the very thought. Jovie, cheering anyone up.
"That's me. I'm completely adorable." She tugged her dress over her head and smoothed it out over her body. "You're not going to wait this long to give me another call, I'm assuming." If he did, she might get irritated and then write him off, which she really didn't feel like doing.
Awesome, they were off the subject of his vampirism. Alejandro could handle that. "Super adorable. Next time, baby, you get to call me. Can't have you waiting on me all the time." He grinned as sweetly as one could when one had fangs. "That wouldn't be right, after all." The ball was in her court again. Though if she took too long, he'd probably wind up calling her. He just hoped he wouldn't have to.
"I guess that's fair." She pushed her hair behind her ears and sat on the edge of the bed to find her sandals. She hated calling men. If she got the urge, she would probably just end up going to the bar to find Alex rather than picking up the phone. "Are you working a long shift tonight?"
"Working my usual shift." Alejandro paused to pull his shirt over his head. "I'm off at four." Him and his late-night hours. "Why, you think you might actually be awake at four AM?" He shot her half a grin, with only one fang in it.
"I'll be in bed getting my beauty sleep at four am," Jovie shot back. She stood up and folded her arms after facing him. "As I'm sure you'll be doing once you get home and the sun starts to come up. You know, it's difficult to get what I want when I want it when you work horrific hours."
"Guess you'll just have to learn how to be patient," Alejandro grunted, bending down to find some comfortable shoes. Though he'd be leaving pretty early if he left now, it was better than sitting around doing nothing. Maybe he could go for a flight. It wasn't too sunny anymore, was it? "Or get me a better job."
"Why don't you get yourself a better job?" Jovie suggested. "You could always find something to do during daytime hours, at home..." Maybe. "Or take a day off every now and then. It's annoying to have to get up and drive home when I'd rather just sleep." Plus, it made her irritable.
"Bartending and killing things are about the only things I'm good at, honey," Alejandro snorted. "So my choices are kinda limited." There simply wasn't anything he could do from home. And while he could go out during the day, as long as the job itself was indoors, he couldn't even imagine what he'd do other than serving drinks. "And if it's such a pain to drive after I've worn you out so bad, next time we'll go to your place, and you can stay and sleep all you want."
Jovie shrugged. "Then you don't give yourself enough credit if that's all you know how to do. But yes, next time you can come to my place." She was much more comfortable kicking him out of her own bed. She wrinkled her nose with a look around before she smirked. "It's much tidier anyway."
Obviously she didn't know him very well. But then, it wasn't like he'd gone out of his way to enlighten her, either. The fact that she knew he'd hunted vampires, now, was a new one, and not one he spread around much. He sat on the edge of his bed beside her to lace up the sneakers. "Yeah, well, I've been busy...." More along the lines of being a pretty typical unhappy bachelor, honestly.
"Working and sleeping, yeah I heard." She rolled her eyes and got up to leave the bedroom to get her purse from where she'd dumped it on the sofa. Jovie didn't care what he did for a living as long as he didn't leave her waiting around forever. Jovie didn't wait on men. Ever.
The girl had better get used to waiting. It happened in life, now and then. Alejandro finished with his shoes and wandered out after her. "Guess I'll see you whenever," he commented, seeing her with purse in hand.
Jovie didn't like waiting, even if she was forced to from time to time. She slipped her purse over her shoulder and glanced at Alex with a raised eyebrow. "That's a nice way of saying goodbye."
Chuckling a bit, Alejandro came over to catch his arms around her waist and pull her into a kiss. "That a little better?" he asked, then. He knew she wasn't the mushy kind, but that didn't mind she'd turn down a kiss, right?
"I guess it'll have to do," Jovie said, though she probably enjoyed it more than she would admit. She kissed him again before pulling away to move toward the door. "I'll see you soon. If you're lucky."
"Or if you are," Alejandro shot back lightly as she left, and while he drifted in the direction of the fridge to check out the last couple doses there, he didn't think he'd actually need either one.
Didn't mean he wouldn't contemplate having one, anyway.
