Coming Clean
Who: Jessalyn and Madock
Where: Jessalyn's house
When: Afternoon
Since Jessalyn figured it was time to come clean with her parents, she called Madock early and asked him to meet her at her house sometime after lunch. There were rumbings around the pack lands of someone moving in, and she knew eventually her parents would find out who it was. Then they would start asking questions, and probably be angry with her for not telling them first. As nervous as it made her, Jessalyn knew she would have to tell them the truth and just hope that they wouldn't take it too terribly.
She sat on the porch with her knitting, waiting for Madock to arrive. Thankfully it would just be her parents around, since her brothers and sisters were in the backyard playing. She didn't really want anyone else to be witness to it, in case it went badly.
Madock was nervous. Terrified was more accurate really. He wasn't sure if her parents would hate him by the time the day was through but he was already leaning towards that. Pulling up at her house, so much closer now that he was living in the pack lands, he got out of the car and headed up to the porch. "Have you told them anything yet?" he questioned, curious if he was about to get eaten alive or something. It would be worth it though, he was certain. If he could just keep telling himself that, things were going to be okay.
She saw him coming up the road and set her knitting aside before she stood. Jess could tell he was nervous, but that was okay. She would have thought something was wrong if he hadn't been. She shook her head at his question. "Just that you were coming over and I wanted them to meet you. They seemed eager." And her mom had been excited, though Jessalyn was sure that would wane. She reached out to take his hand. "Things will be okay though."
Though he still had the thought in his head to lie and say someone else had bitten him, he was pretty certain that her parents would be able to see right through it. He had to come clean, it was the best course of action. Taking the last step towards her, he wrapped his fingers around hers and took in a breath. "Well, guess we're gonna see." he said. "We'll get through it." A rough road lay ahead, he knew, but the faster he got inside, the faster things would be through with.
"Don't be too nervous," she said, leading him to the front door where her parents would be inside waiting. "They'll smell that on you right away." It was easier said than done, since Jessalyn was nervous herself. Her parents would sense he was a wolf right away. Hopefully she could just get past the mating part before they realized the rest of it. Pushing open the door, she led Madock to the living room where her mom and dad were waiting.
It was impossible to not be nervous and Madock's heartbeat said as much as it thumped violently in his chest, threatening to burst through his ribcage and fall onto the floor at any moment. He gave her fingers a little squeeze as they entered the living room and he gave her parents a nervous little smile. "Hello."
Jett was the first to walk over to Madock and offer his hand out. Jessalyn watched her father carefully, and she could tell by the subtle flicker in his eyes that he knew Madock was like them. "You're Madock," Jett said politely. "It's nice to finally meet you. Jessalyn talks about you all the time."
Jessalyn would have protested from embarrassment, but it was the truth, so why lie? Her cheeks flushed, which thankfully would probably go unnoticed as her mother walked up to give Madock a friendly hug. "I'm Luna and this is my husband, Jett."
Madock too Jett's hand, giving it a little shake. "Nice to meet you too." he said, giving the guy a smile and already quite aware that he already knew. How could he not? Madock hadn't bothered with the charm bracelet that day, not needing it out here in the packlands. It wasn't quite so busy and full of smells as it was in town. He could smell Jett and Luna just as much as they could smell him.
Once he released Jett's hand, he was enveloped in a hug from her mother. He doubted the happy and friendly greeting would turn into happy and friendly conversation. He also doubted that they'd remain 'happy to meet him' either.
"Come over and sit down," Luna said, taking Madock by the arm and leading him to the sofa. Jessalyn followed, though she was distracted by trying to think of the best way to break the news to her parents. A part of her felt like maybe they already knew, just from meeting Madock, but she didn't know if that was just her paranoia speaking.
"Madock just moved to the pack lands," Jessalyn explained, sitting down beside him as her dad took a seat in one of the empty chairs. She knew they would know he was a werewolf already.
"Where do your parents live?" Jett asked, leaning forward and clasping his hands together casually. "Did they join you?"
Madock followed along and settled himself on the sofa beside Luna, wondering if he should just come out and tell her all about everything that had happened so they could get on with the reaming. Knowing it was coming made his stomach hurt and his heart still thudded against his ribcage. "They live in town." he told Jessalyn's father. "I moved out here by myself."
Jessalyn could feel Madock's anxiety - or rather, she sensed it, so she knew her parents did too. Licking her lips, she glanced at her dad on the chair and winced. "He was bitten," she blurted out, just because she couldn't really take it anymore. She knew her dad wouldn't attack Madock or anything, but she wasn't looking forward to the disappointment she would feel from them. "Just recently... and he wanted to be near me, so he moved out here."
"I'm sorry," Luna said, frowning as she glanced at Jett. "That had to have been an incredibly painful experience."
Nodding a little, Madock looked down at his feet. "It didn't feel good, that's for sure." he admitted. He couldn't lie and say it was an amazing experience. The bite part of it had sucked. "But I wasn't attacked..." he said softly, biting his bottom lip and deliberately not looking up at either parent.
There was some confusion on Luna's face, but Jessalyn could tell her father was realizing what that meant, because he was staring at her as if he could read her mind. "I bit him," Jessalyn admitted before a small huff of breath escaped her lips. She knew it was horrible news, but at the same time, it felt like a rock lifted from her shoulders. She glanced toward the door and was sure one of more of her siblings were roaming about, listening, but she couldn't help that now. "I'm really sorry," she whispered, shifting her gaze back to her parents.
"You bit him?" Jett asked, his tone way too calm, which meant he was angrier than Jessalyn would have liked. Her mom simply whispered her name in an appalled, shocked way that had Jessalyn cringing again.
Madock sucked in a breath and squeezed his eyes shut for a brief moment before looking at her mother and then at Jett. "It was my fault." he told him. "I asked her to, so don't be angry with her, please? Be angry with me, that's fine, you got every right to be, but she didn't do it to hurt you or me or anyone. I asked for it and she just did what I asked her to do." God this sucked. He wanted to just run away.
"Why on earth would you ask for something like that?" Jett asked Madock, his voice raising, but only slightly. Jessalyn knew he wouldn't want everyone in the house to hear what was going on - even if they probably could. She could tell with a quick sideways glanced at her mom was brushing away tears, which made Jessalyn feel horrible, but there was nothing she could really do about it now. "You realize what this means for you, as a human? And for Jessalyn as well."
Madock's stomach tightened up and he was thankful that it wasn't anger that filled him up but disappointment in himself for convincing Jessalyn to do something that made her parents feel as badly as they obviously felt. "I wanted to be like her." he admitted. "I just felt like it wasn't fair to her to be committing to me like she was when I couldn't do the same and I know that it was stupid and that I shoulda thought it through more, but there's nothing that either one of us can do about it now." he sighed, pushing his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry." he said softly. "I do understand what it means for me though, yes."
Jessalyn licked her lips and reached over to grab his hand in hers, for a sign of solidarity. She knew he felt awful, and she wanted him to know she didn't blame him for this.
"Committed," Luna said through an audible sniffle. "So... you have already mated?" Jett was up and pacing, and Jessalyn could feel his anger.
"We did," Jessalyn admitted. "I love him though. And I know you never met him, and this is a lot of information to take in, but I want to be with him, and it's my choice, just like Charlotte was Ransom's choice. He's only a year older than me."
"Ransom and Charlotte have been together longer than the two of you," Jett exclaimed. "And we've met Charlotte."
"You're meeting Madock now," Jessalyn responded, though not in a defiant tone. She wouldn't talk back to her father, or the alpha of her family. "And Ransom and Charlotte were only together about a month. I know the biting was a mistake... we both should have thought about it more, but like Madock said, I can't change it."
Madock winced at the sound of Jett's exclamation and his heart sank into the pit of his stomach with an almost audible splash. His insides felt like they were sloshing around and he thought he might throw up if the tension got any thicker in the room. "I'm sorry..." he said softly because that was the two simple words that kept bouncing around in his brain. His fingers tightened on Jessalyn's hand so much that it hurt his hand and he had to remember that he could hurt her. Loosening his grip on her hand but not releasing her, he let out a shaky breath. It was all his fault and there was nothing that he could do to fix it.
Jessalyn squeezed his hand a bit when he released her, and she stood up from the couch to face her dad. "I know that you're disappointed, and angry... I can deal with that, I think. I don't want you to judge Madock on what happened... he's my mate now, and that won't change. If you want me to leave or something, I will."
"Jess," her mom sighed before standing up from the couch herself. "We don't want you to leave. We are disappointed, because we taught you better than that. I realize it's your choice to find your own mate, and if you love Madock and you chose him, then we support that. But biting him... that might take a little longer for us to accept and deal with. It's against everything we stand for to bite a human."
"I just can't see how anyone would want that kind of curse thrust upon him." Jett's words were clipped and still angry, though Jessalyn felt as though her mother's resignation was dulling his temper a bit. "You could become a complete outsider in our pack, and in our community. If you're both willing to accept that kind of life, then there's nothing I can say."
Unsure of what to say, Madock just kept his mouth shut for a long moment. Again he felt a sharp pain in his insides and he wanted to just go back and take it all back to keep that disappointment from showing in Jessalyn's parents the way that it was.
"I'm willing to accept whatever sort of life means that I can be with Jessalyn." Madock told him, honestly drenching each syllable he spoke. "I wanted this life because I wanted Jessalyn to know that I wouldn't leave her. I could promise her forever all I wanted and it would never be the same sort of forever she'd given me. You can hate me as much as you want to hate me for doing this, for messing up everything that I've messed up, but I went into this with the best of intentions, just not the best of plans." he sighed. "I guess I should go..." he muttered, standing up from the couch. "Doubt I'm going to be welcome here for quite some time if ever."
Jessalyn frowned when Madock stood up to go, but Luna reached out to place a hand on his arm before Jess could. "I'm not doubting your intentions Madock. I can tell you're very sincere in your feelings for Jessalyn. But biting a human is very taboo in our community and I worry what the repercussions could be for Jess, that's all."
"I'll accept whatever they are," Jessalyn said stubbornly. "And I'm sorry we've upset you both. I wish I could make it better, but... I can't."
Jett sighed and rubbed his hands wearily over his face. "Give us time, Madock. You understand why we can't accept this so willingly right away. I need time to process this, and then we can talk again." When he was less angry and ready to snap. Jessalyn took a breath and glanced at Madock.
"I'll walk you out," she murmured, not wanting Madock to overstay his welcome anymore than he had. If her parents were raging and screaming, then there was a chance that in the end, this might be okay.
"I understand that and had I thought more about what could happen to her, I wouldn't have asked her to do this." Madock told them. "The last thing I want is for her to be in any sort of trouble or pain. I didn't mean for this to be like it is, but when it comes down to it, what's done is done and there's nothing I can say or do to make it better or change it from what it is now. I understand that it's not right, it's... taboo like you said, but there's nothing I can do to change it..." he said again, not realizing he'd already said that once. "I'm sorry." he said again. "I don't expect you to welcome me with open arms, I'm honestly a little surprised you're not ripping my throat out." he admitted. "You've got all the time you need... I'll... see you later... I guess. It was nice meeting you... just wish the circumstances were different..."
Neither of Jessalyn's parents said anything, but they glanced at one another after Madock finished speaking. Jessalyn knew they wouldn't shun Madock, or cut Jessalyn out of their family. They were dealing with a lot and they were disappointed, and she couldn't blame them for being upset. She was just hoping once they had time to sit down and think, they wouldn't be so quick to judge Madock. She took his hand again and led him out to the porch, waiting until the door was shut before she spoke. "It's going to be okay. They know I love you... and I know they could tell you loved me. Maybe they wished the circumstances were different, but we..." She didn't want to say they made a mistake, because with the bond she felt with Madock, she didn't feel it was. Jessalyn sighed and then offered him a small smile. "They took it better than I thought they would, to be honest."
Madock let out a breath and pulled the hand that Jessalyn was holding, wanting her closer to him. His arms immediately twined around the girl's body and he held tight to her. "I'm sorry I got you in trouble..." he whispered softly. "But us... this... it's not wrong." he breathed. "And if I have to prove that everyday for the rest of my life, I'm going to do it." he assured her. He didn't want her to think of them as a mistake, no matter how little thinking he'd done before she'd bit him. "I love you, alright? And that's not gonna change."
"I got myself into trouble," Jessalyn murmured before slipping her arms tightly around him. "But you're worth the trouble. I don't know if other people will see that or not, and I don't care. Everything will be fine... we just have to give it some time." A lot of it, probably, but Jessalyn was ready for that. "Let me spend some time with them, and I'll see if I can talk to them alone... Maybe they'll accept it, even if they'll never understand it."
Kissing the side of her head, lips pressing against the mess of Jessalyn's blonde hair, Madock nodded just slightly. "Alright." he said. "They don't have to understand it... I don't expect anyone to understand it..." he murmured. "I love you and you love me and that's what matters." he told her. "Guess I should let you get back in there. I gotta go to work here in a little bit anyways." he sighed. "Can I call you later? It might be a little late though... maybe I can just text you instead."
"Text me," Jessalyn said, moving to kiss him on the lips. "And then I'll call when I get your text." She didn't care how late it was, she would be up waiting for him. "Try not to let this bring you down, okay? Everything will be fine, I promise." She would try as hard as she could to keep that promise.
"Alright." he nodded, kissing her once more. "It'll be alright." he told her, brushing her hair behind her ear. "At least we don't have to worry about them knowing or not knowing anymore. That's one thing that isn't weighing on my brain anymore." There was that tiny bit of relief, thankfully.
She nodded. "That's true. It's best they know now then finding out later...and we told them. It's not like they had to find out from someone else." Jessalyn reached up to brush her hands through his hair. "I'll come see you tomorrow... and then maybe we can spend some time together away from here. Go to the movies, or something like that."
"Yeah." he agreed. "I don't have to work til later in the evening tomorrow." he said. "I need to get a couch for the house though. Which reminds me, Tayne came by yesterday. Gave me some books to read through. About being a were." he explained. "I didn't have anywhere for him to sit, so I need to do some thrift store shopping. You could come with me."
She smiled, since that sounded like fun. "Of course I will." It would be nice to do something normal, instead of worrying and fretting so much. "We'll find you a good couch... a big, comfortable one." One that she could throw him down on and do naughty things.
Madock smiled right back at her and gave her another little kiss. "Sounds like a plan then. Hopefully your mom and dad won't want you grounded for eternity..." he said, scrunching up his nose a little at the thought. "I love you. And I'll see you tomorrow and text you tonight after work, alright? Let me know what happens, okay?"
"I love you too." Reluctantly she pulled back. Her parents could ground her, but they probably knew that wouldn't keep Jessalyn from her mate. It would be torture for Jessalyn for them to even try. "Be careful... I'll talk to you soon and I'll let you know if anything changes."
"Alright." he said with a nod before heading off the porch and out to his car. He hoped that things would get better and there was some middle ground of acceptance for them to meet at. Maybe he'd get lucky.
