you're miles away
Who: Krist and Vanessa
Where: Phone conversation
When: Sometime around noon
Krist had been sitting around Tayne's house ever since the other were had left for work that morning. He'd been unable to go back to sleep, or to figure out how to use the television properly. Nothing seemed to be as interesting as the movies they'd watched the night before and, frustrated, Krist turned to the phone that had been left with him. He stared at it for a while, laid down on the floor on his back, and flipped it open. The light came on and smiled vaguely, intrigued by it. Tayne had shown him how to answer it. He hadn't explained the rest of the buttons. He hit something random and a list of funny shapes showed up -- familiar only in that Krist recognized those same scribbly forms everywhere. He wished he could read again, wondering if it would ever happen... Eventually his thumb hit the "up" button, and the list shot to the bottom where there were a few names. The name "Vanessa" was highlighted, and as he sighed he pressed another button. "Oh... what...?" A sound came out of it, and Krist stared, unsure of what to do about it.
Vanessa was at work when her phone went off. The ringer was silent but she could feel it vibrating in her pocket. It was a good thing she was shelving books when it rang, otherwise... Well she wouldn't have been able to even check it. When she saw it was Tayne calling she answered quickly. "What's wrong?" She asked, he knew she was at work and would only call if it were an emergency.
"Huh?" Krist looked stunned, and then remembered what Tayne had told him about talking into it. He held it up to his ear, mouth open and eyes wide. "I... hello?" He sounded confused, very much like he had no idea who he was talking to. "Am I talking to another human?" he asked. He wondered if Tayne would be upset with him later, but the thought was so small that it barely registered. He was fascinated by the concept of being able to talk to somebody like this.
Vanessa's eyes narrowed and she looked at her phone again. "You're not Tayne." She said slowly after confirming that it was infact his number calling her. "Who are you and what have you done with my brother?" She wasn't getting a vibe off her bracelt, hadn't blacked out and drawn anything so... what did this mean?
Krist sat up straight, brow furrowed as he listened to the change in her voice. "Your brother? Tayne is your brother?" How interesting... so this person had to be good, then. "I'm just living with him. He's at work right now... but he'll be home later. He told me to keep this phone on me... in case he needed to talk to me. Or if I got lost, I think." Krist paused, licked his lips and shifted his weight on the carpet. "My name is Krist, and I'm a... um, a werehorse. Are you a were like Tayne?"
"You're living wi-..." Nessa rubbed her temple and shook her head. "No I'm not like him. You know you really shouldn't be calling people on Taynes phone without his permission. Not everyone knows what he is." She said softly, trying to stay quiet- being in a library and all. "And he might not be ok with you using the minutes on his phone." Vanessa knew that the family plan everyone was on had plenty of minutes for everyone, but this guy had come out with Taynes secret so easily... if he'd called Tor... god knows what would have happened.
Krist felt a bit of guilt settle into his stomach when the person on the other end told him that he shouldn't have called her on Tayne's phone. "What are the minutes on his phone...?" He was confused now, and feeling bad about calling at all. "I'm sorry, I didn't... I didn't know. I'm not sure what you mean. I can hang up, I think. I just close it, right?"
"The minutes are how long somone can talk on the phone without being charged more money. And yea, to hang up you should be able to just close it." Vanessa felt a little guilty, the person on the other line sounding so down and guilty- though he sounded older it made her wonder how old he really was as he didn't talk as if he were older.
"So by talking to you I'm costing Tayne money, then?" Krist nodded, as though she could see what it was he was doing. "I understand, I think. How does that work, though? I mean... how do they know that the phone is being talked on?" He looked at the phone quickly before putting it back to hear her response. He didn't see anything attached to it; nothing obvious anyway. He'd have to look more closely after talking to this person. "Do you have a name?" It was said with total innocent curiosity, the tone higher in pitch and genuinely interested.
"I don't know how it works, I just know it does. And yes. My name is Vanessa." She said rubbing he temple again. Tayne was going to have a little talking to about letting strange guys use his phone and stay in his house when he wasn't there. I mean for god sake, who is suposed to be the older, more knowledgeable sibling?
"Vanessa is a nice name." Krist got up from the floor to move to sit on the couch, settling again with the phone still held to his ear. "Thank you for telling me about how phones work. I won't call you anymore without Tayne's permission."
"Don't call anyone anymore without Tayne's permission." Vanessa told him. She was still thinking of the hell that would have rained down if he'd called Tor instead of her and slipped the were thing. "And thank you."
"Sorry." Krist hung up abruptly, still not sure on phone etiquette. He didn't know this woman, but she had clearly been upset by his call and that made him uncomfortable. Hopefully Tayne wouldn't be upset at him later, come home angry over the call. If this woman really was his sister, there was a good chance she was going to tell Tayne all about the incident later. He sighed and set the phone down on the table nearby, staring at it from the couch as though it had scolded him. In the back of Krist's mind, he couldn't help but wonder if he was going to be dumped someplace else later because of this...
