She… was in the tub? He’d seen her approximately half naked, maybe a little bit more, but beyond that? He tried to push those thoughts out of his mind… it wasn’t easy. He thought about her in the tub and was pretty grateful that he was in the car instead of near her or anyone else… just in case. He wasn’t quite as cold as he was a few seconds before, that was for sure.
Thankfully, her follow up words brought that feeling of stunned blankness back to the forefront. She missed him? Each time he heard it, Jack started to believe it just a little bit more. It was a work in progress. There was one thing for sure, though. “I miss you, too… I know I told you yesterday… but I really am glad that I went over there to see you. It helped so much. And I actually got to sleep a little bit today. Believe me when I say that it’s a pretty rare thing for me to get a full eight hours in this house. I think you’re mostly responsible for that.” She was like that mobile that he apparently used to have when he was growing up… well, in essence. Not in actuality.
Listening to her words, he tried to decipher them. He wasn’t going to be oblivious at that moment. No, he couldn’t let himself. It was something too important. Parsing it out before the pause, he wasn’t sure she won. Maybe a runner up… until she added more.
“You won!?” He wasn’t shocked, it was more of a pleasant surprise. Again, if he was in the house, he would have woke up or at least called attention to himself from everyone that was inside. He wasn’t sure how sound proof his car was, but hopefully it wouldn’t wake anyone up. “Wow… that’s just… that’s great! You’re Miss Michigan! Did you have to give Miss Kalamazoo a reality check? She seemed like she thought she was God’s gift…”
