Nothing beats a delicious donut.
Who: Lia and Jason
Where: The bakery
When: Morning, the time for breakfast and coffee
She had seen the place the day before when she was driving home and Lia wanted to check it out. One thing she loved was baked goods, from the good Italian bakeries. And, since this place had an Italian sounding name, she hoped that's what it was. When she walked in, it smelt delicious and she knew she had found the place. The dark haired woman behind the counter was sweet and she walked over, looking at the cases.
"How are you doing this morning?" she asked Lia, who looked in awe at all the treats. "We have some donuts that are fresh, if you'd like."
"I think you said the magic words. One glazed and one powered please. And a large coffee, light and sweet." She moved over to the register to pay and smiled at the guy standing behind her, feeling happy this morning.
Jason hadn't slept yet, he'd not had to work (it was his night off) but he did go to a club in Ann Arbor and well, was returning from a bed of a guy he'd not known. Now, coffee, donuts and then probably home for a shower and change of clothes. "They have the best donuts." He told the girl before him in line after she'd paid.
She stepped to the side so he could order. "I hope so. I haven't found donuts that remind me of home yet. I have my fingers crossed." Lia held them up to show him, grinning. Clearly, she was teasing, but it was fun to be a little silly. "Been coming here long?" The woman handed her the bag with the donuts and her cup of coffee, of which she immediately took a big swig.
Jason ordered and nodded to the other customer. "Longer than I can remember." He said, it had been a godsend since he'd started to teach. Pulling his wallet out of his leather jacket he paid the woman behind the counter. He took his food and coffee and thanked the woman, dropping a couple bucks in the tip jar.
"That long huh?" she said with a light laugh. She looked him over, thinking he looked a little tired. "I'm Lia, I'm new in town." Lia smiled at him and sipped at her coffee some more, glad to have it. She would have to tell Quentin about this place, maybe bring him some food.
"Jason, and I've lived here for quite a few years." Not born here, but he'd been there since college. "This is a nice town, you'll enjoy it." Ok, so Jason knew nothing about her but all the same.
"Nice to meet you." She moved towards a small table near the front as the door opened and more people came inside. It looked to be a morning rush. "You planning on staying? We could share a table if you'd like?" Lia knew in New York, it didn't matter; people would have just sat down. Here, it was a little different.
"I've got no where to be, so why not." Jason said, gesturing to one of the tables away from the bright light of the windows which were going to be killer on his mild hangover. He let her go first and once they got to the table he pulled out the chair for her like a gentleman before sitting himself.
Lia smiled at him. That was certainly unexpected and she took a napkin to wipe at the table before setting her bag down. "Thank you, Jason," she said, pleased there were still at least a few gentlemen left in the world. It was a nice surprise.
Jason shrugged and took a sip of his coffee. "So, how long have you been in town?" He asked, hoping the caffine would kick in a bit quicker and wondering where his sponsors card was. He probably should attend another meeting, or give him a call or something- or at least that would be the -right- thing to do. Probably wouldn't happen.
Biting into the glazed donut was like biting into a piece of the city. She might not be able to have bagels, but oh, did she find donuts. "Just a few weeks," she said, taking a sip of coffee to help her with the math. "Getting close to a month now. I'm going to the university in the fall, so I came out early to get used to the place." Second bite was even better than the first as she praised who ever had set up shop in this small town.
"U of M?" Jason inquired, breaking off a piece of his donut and taking abite. It was really good, and hit the sweet tooth spot that needed to be hit.
She nodded, wiping the bit of glaze from her mouth. "Yeah. English major. Probably going to get my teaching accreditation." Lia paused and took another coffee break. "You a student?"
Jason shook his head. "Ah, no. -Was-. I'm not a teacher here at the high school. History." He replied, breaking off another piece of donut and took a sip of his coffee. "What level of teaching are you thinking of pursuing?"
Huh. A high school teacher. That was an interesting coincidence. "High school, actually. Can't stand little kids for more than a half hour. They drive me nuts." Not that teens were much better, but Lia felt she could handle them better. She started on her second donut. "You like it?"
Jason nodded. "It can be... stressful sometimes, but the kids can surprise you." He was happy about this coincidence, after all teachers were needed. That or he was just so tired that everything was a little happy. "I wouldn't give up teaching for anything." Though working as a donor at the brothel part time was ok.
"That's really good to hear." She didn't think she would be moving back to New York any time soon, despite the fact that she had a degree to complete. Lia took a huge sip of coffee. "I'm hoping that I fit in around here enough to stay," she mused.
"I'm sure you will." He said with a smile. "And hey, you've at least one friend in town." Jason told her. She was nice, and he had a feeling that they'd at least get on, so if she wanted to at least test friendship, he'd be up for it.
She grinned. "That's really good to hear." It wasn't that she'd hadhundreds of friends in New York but this was different. She wassupposed to start over. And new friends seemed like just the way to doit.
"So, what classes are you going to be taking?" He asked, sipping his coffee and listening intently, as they slipped out of small talk and into a real conversation.
