Just like riding a bike.
Who: Tanya and Dante
When: Afternoonish
Where: Dog-Ink
After leaving Nevermore, Tanya had every intention of returning home and maybe taking Tommy to the park. But as she was driving, she was distracted by what Dorian had told her. She was going to have to find a blood witch and suck up her apprehension about the entire thing if she wanted to get rid of this curse. She knew she wouldn't be able to do it alone. So it was either that, or spend the rest of her life wallowing in misery. She didn't want that for Tommy. And right now, she would do just about anything for him, including hiring a blood witch.
Rather than heading home straight away, Tanya made an abrupt decision and turned her car in the opposite direction of her house. She drove until she found herself parking at the tattoo parlor where she had gotten her first two tattoos. And her multiple piercings... none of which she had anymore but for her ears, and even those had been cut down from eight to the basic two. She was really tired of dwelling in self pity, and she missed the person she used to be. The fun person who was fearless and would try just about anything and everything at least once. She played everything far too cautiously now, and maybe it was time to try and change that.
Walking into the parlor, Tanya slipped her car keys into her jacket and glanced around. The place was as foreign to her as it was familiar.
Dante had just finished up a tongue piercing and was internally laughing his ass off at the man who'd done it because of a few reasons. One, he was slobbering all over himself already, and two because it was the funniest thing in the world to hear the man try speaking. The pain of another person could be so hilarious sometimes.
Once he'd taken the man's money and given him the little pamphlet on how to care for his new piercing, he glanced up at the next person in line and his mouth fell open. "Well would you look who the cat done drug in this mornin'." he grinned. "It's been a long time, bitch, where've you been?" he asked, coming around the counter for a hug.
Tanya smiled when she caught sight of Dante. He looked exactly the same to her. Only three years older. "Hey!" She hugged him tightly before falling back on her heels to look him over again. "You look great. I wasn't sure if you would still be working here or not." She had always imagined Dante would grow bored of a place like Scarlet Oak and move to the city where he could be boisterous and loud. Not that he couldn't be here... people were just more wary of it.
"Course I do." he smirked. "You expect anything less than fantastic from me? Heifer please." Dante looked over the woman for a half second and motioned for her to do a little spin. "You look lots more grown up, miss thing." Dante told her. "All them piercings are gone. What brings you in here if you're gonna be all motherly?"
Tanya obliged him and twirled around before doing an exaggerated curtsey. Laughing, she straighted and pushed her hair back from her face. "I know, I know... I got rid of the piercings when Tommy turned one... once a baby gets into their grabby phase, it's probably not safe to have piercings. If he saw something shiny, he'd make a play for it." She folded her arms with a grin. "But... he's six now, and... I don't know. Maybe it's time to stop being so uptight about things." Or try anyway. "I was thinking about getting my belly button pierced this time. What do you think?"
Dante folded his arms across his chest, the muscles on his arms flexing just a bit from the movement. "Depends. I should see the belly button I'm working with before I give any definite answers. You is a mom now. What kinda battle scars you got from the kiddy?" he teased.
Tanya scowled briefly before she stuck her tongue out at him. She unzipped her track jacket and tugged up her John Lennon t-shirt. "My stomach looks damn good, thank you very much." She hadn't had a C-section with Tommy, and she had worked hard after his birth to maintain her figure. "No real battle scars... I think my son is a pacifist," she teased.
Dante chuckled. "You actually look pretty damn good for havin' a kid." he admitted. "I suppose I can grace that belly with one of my piercings. Come on back and we'll get you all good to go." he smiled, motioning for her to follow him into the back room and letting her climb up on the piercing table. "So what have you been doin' with yourself since you've been MIA?"
"I look fantastic for having a kid," Tanya corrected with a laugh. She followed him into the back room, somewhat pleased with her impulsiveness. It was nice feeling like she could do something for herself for once. After she was on the table, she shrugged. "Working. Chasing around a six year old boy who's so much like his father that I'm sure he's going to jump off the roof someday just for the fun of it." Tanya sighed before smiling. "I wasn't too far away... I've been living in Canada."
"Canada?" he asked, arching a brow. "And what possessed you to run off all the way to Canada? That's a whole other country, girl. Was you running to or away from something?" Dante asked as he got his instruments ready, washed his hands and found a starter barbell to put in once he was finished.
"It's complicated," Tanya answered. That was her go-to response when people asked her why she left Michigan. Right now it was nice being with someone who wasn't glaring at her, calling her names, or hating her guts. If she told Dante anything, she was sure she'd just get another lecture. "I guess I'm back now though." She didn't really have a choice. "What about you? What have you been doing since we last spoke?"
"Getting by, girl, getting by." he told her. "Doing the club thing every once in a while. Going out. Going back in with whoever I damn well please. Had a run in with a very clingy little girl that I hope I never see comin' or goin' ever again." Dante said, shaking his head a little. He sat out his instruments and glanced up at the girl. "How complicated is complicated?" he asked.
"God, I haven't gone out in... a long time," she surmised. She couldn't even remember the last time she'd gone dancing, or to a club. Tanya grinned at Dante and arched an eyebrow. "You have to be careful of the clingy ones. If you're not careful, you'll get stuck with a clingy psychopath instead of just clingy." She watched him set up the things needed to pierce her belly button and she felt a small thrill of excitement. It had been so long since she'd done something like this. At his question, she shrugged again. "I was having problems with Scott. I think... maybe I made some rash decisions. I left. Now I'm back, everyone and their cat hates me and..." Tanya trailed off with a faint smile. "I'm trying to get my life back together. Somehow I feel like this is step one."
"Well me and you's just gonna have to go out sometime then, aren't we?" he said with a smile. "Get away from clingy and Scott all at the same time." Dante told her. "Alright then, you already know the rules of piercing and all that. Six weeks before you can change this one out." he explained. "Go ahead and lay back and I'll get you started on your way back to fun Tanya."
She could be fun Tanya. As long as she wasn't in love. Of course, she'd been in love for six years, which was why she'd been miserable for six years. Stupid, dumbass Scott. Tanya laid back and shifted to a slightly more comfortable position. "We're definitely going to have to go out. It's been so long... promise me you'll take me to a dance club or something. I'll tip you off to the clingy girls before it's too late."
"We'll just go to a gay club and get you's a lesbian lover." he grinned, sitting himself down on his stool and scooting himself over to her. He picked up the alcoholic swab to clean her belly button. He reached up and slid her shirt out of the way. Wiping down the area, he arched a brow at her. "Get yourself a baby sitter and we'll go out next free day you got, girl." he assured her. "I'll make sure to be open for you."
She started laughing, and struggled to stop herself. Laughing while he was about to stick her with a needle wasn't going to help things at all. "Oh man, if only. Life would be so much simpler if I were a lesbian, I'm sure." Tanya glanced at him with a smile and a small nod. "I won't need a babysitter... he's got his dad around now. I'm sure Scott would be more than willing to take him for a night. I haven't gotten myself a job yet--" She needed to go back to Canada and try and tie up loose ends. "--so I'm free whenever you decide you want to put some glitter on those cheeks and get wasted with me."
"We can go tomorrow night, girl." Dante offered. "Glitter and mascara and everything. You might have to dress ten times as good as today if you even wanna get a sideways glance standin' next to me." he chuckled. He picked up the little pen to mark the center of her belly button where the needle would go in and where it would come out to make sure he'd get it straight, then picked up the clamps. "You ain't gonna scream are you?" he asked with a teasing little smirk.
"Tomorrow? That sounds fantastic," Tanya remarked with a wider smile. Dressing up, going dancing, grinding up against hot, anonymous men? Even if they were gay... it sounded like heaven. "I clean up pretty nice myself, Dante, so you might have some competition." She placed her hands on her chest, just below her breasts and looked down at the mark on her stomach before arching a dark eyebrow. "Did you seriously ask me if I was going to scream? I only scream in the bedroom, sweetheart, so do your thing."
"Oh really? Might have to see about all that for myself." he smiled. "But I wouldn't want to ruin all the chances for them white boys you run with." Dante teased. "Once you go black baby, you never go back." he chuckled, picking up the needle and going ahead with the piercing. She didn't scream. Good girl. He grabbed the barbell and slipped it through and removed the needle. Tightening on the other ball, he pulled the clamp away and gave her a smile. "Well on your way to being fun Tanya." he smiled.
She resisted laughing again and shook her head. That was one thing she had loved about Dante... you could count on him to cheer you up, even if he wasn't aware you needed it. "That's what I've been told," Tanya said. "Mostly by you, but still." She paused and winced a bit when the needle went through. She'd always been tough when it came to pain, and she had enough experience with needles to become somewhat immune to how much they could hurt. She pushed up on her elbows to look at the barbell in her belly button. It would be sore, but that was okay. "Remind me to wear something to show this off tomorrow," Tanya said with a smile. "You're awesome, Dante, thank you."
"I will." he smiled. "And of course I'm awesome." he said. "Did you expect any different?" he washed up the instruments and put all his things away, then he washed his hands again and led her out to the office to pay. "I'll give you my number." Dante told her, picking up one of the little cards and scrawling out his number in perfect, girly cursive on the back of it. "Matter of fact, if you give me a call early enough, I might even drop by and give you a few pointers." he smirked.
She pulled her wallet out of her bag and handed him some cash, fully intending on tipping him generously. "I would fall over dead if you were anything but," Tanya agreed with a grin. "And yes, I'll give you a call early enough that you can come over and tell me everything I'm doing wrong. Don't you dare forget either. I'm already excited to be going out and doing something non-mommy related."
"You think I'm gonna pass up a chance to get out on the town? Please." he chuckled, putting the cash in the register. "You way overtipped me." he told her. He had the right mind to hand the cash back to miss mommy, but he doubted she'd allow him to. "Guess I'm really gonna have to help you out with your fashion." Dante smiled.
"I tipped you exactly right," Tanya corrected as she lifted her shirt to examine the piercing again. It looked great. Slipping her shirt back down carefully, she smiled at Dante. "I look forward to it... not that I think there's anything wrong with how I dress." She stuck her tongue at him before grinning. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow." Dante nodded. "And stop stickin' that tongue out unless you's gonna be usin' it. And it's been a few days, I could definitely put it to work." he teased.
Tanya burst into laughter and shook her head. "I haven't used my tongue for anything other than eating and talking in three years, Dante, I doubt you would enjoy it." She winked at him before zipping her jacket back up. "I've got to get back to my dad's before Tommy drives him bonkers. See you tomorrow, Dante." Tanya waved and headed for the door before shooting him a look. "Be good."
"Please, gorgeous, it's like riding a bike." he smiled. "You just gotta get back on one and it'll all come back to you." Dante told her. "Go on and get outta here and I'll see you tomorrow."
Somehow she doubted she would be getting on anything he was referring to for a long time. It wasn't as if she couldn't. Because Tanya could. It was just that she chose not to. It was a weird, guilty feeling, like she would be cheating, even if she had been divorced for three years. "I'll take that into consideration." Tanya grinned and waved at Dante before pushing open the door to head home to her son.
