Tell me, have you run into a lot of silver?
Who: Tayne and Rowena
When: Noonish
Where: Phonelines
Rowena really hadn't wanted to go into work that morning. She still wasn't feeling very well at all, but she didn't want Noah to continue thinking that he'd hurt her. He hadn't known about the silver. She hadn't known about the silver. About lunch time she realized that Tayne might not know about silver either. When her break rolled around, she retreated outside of the store and to a shady side of the building to make her phone call. She just hoped the boy wasn't busy.
Tayne was busy. He'd come in to work an hour and a half early, trying to make up for some of the time he'd lost taking three days off due to his new wereness and the bite, so at noon he was hip deep in lunch orders. However, when his cell phone rang, he checked it. Rowena's number was one that would make him answer, busy or not busy. He popped his earpiece in-- not a Bluetooth, but some less expensive knock-off that still kept his hands free-- and answered. "Rowena, hi. What's up?"
"Hey, Tayne?" Duh, of course it would be him, it was his cell phone after all. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, I just wanted to talk to about something that happened and seeing as you might come across the same type of thing... well, I just wanted to warn you before you got into a position that you didn't want to be in." she explained. "Do you end up around a lot of silver?" Rowena asked him.
"Well, silverware, but that's not quite the same thing. Most of it is aluminum and steel these days. Why, did--" He caught on, a bit belatedly, to what she was talking about. "--oh, Rowena, you didn't know about silver?" he changed course, wincing and apologetic at the same time. "Shit, I should've warned you, I'm sorry." That was one of the big ones, after all, and she didn't get into this thing a hunter, already knowing a were's weaknesses....
"No..." she said, shaking her head. "I didn't know about silver." she admitted, feeling a little dumb that she hadn't known. "Apparently my boyfriend didn't either. So last night when he gifted me with a silver keychain... well, I guess I found out pretty quick that silver wasn't a good thing for me. I still feel sick after touching it and I barely held it for a minute at most. A few seconds the first time. I got confused after that and put it down and when I picked it up again, I felt the odd feeling again and then... it just went downhill from there. I didn't want to have you end up running into the same sort of thing." Rowena explained. "I'm glad you already know about it."
"Yeah, I know a lot of the basics-- I mean, you know what I was doing that night when... yeah." He couldn't be terribly open; after all, he was in a crowded kitchen. But he had a feeling she'd know what he meant. "I do that sort of thing a lot. I know what-- what helps and what hurts, basically. Damn, I'm gonna hafta be careful with my silver knives and the silver edge of my hand axe now," he added with a little chuckle, flipping a burger over on the grill with a loud hissing.
Rowena managed a tiny laugh at that, one which made her stomach hurt a little. "Do you think it's going to stop hurting?" she asked. "I mean... that little touch isn't going to like... have lasting effects is it? It was just a tiny little key chain. Poor Noah was just beside himself when he realized. He'd been reading up after I told him what I was, about weres. He's a vet and he's like expanding his practice to include medical care for them." she explained. "Mostly because of me I guess, but anyway, he'd been reading up and hadn't gotten to the silver part so he was freaking out because he hurt me... I just... I feel so badly for him because it's not like he came after me with a gun full of silver bullets or something."
"No, you'll get over it," Tayne promised. "You probably feel better today than you did yesterday, right? So it'll keep getting better until you won't feel badly at all. And your boyfriend certainly has no reason to beat himself up-- it's the same thing as serving you shrimp when neither of you know you're allergic to shellfish. At least now you both know."
"Good." she said, heaving a relieved little sigh. "I do feel a little better, definitely not as awful as I felt last night, that's for sure." Rowena said, shaking her head. "It was almost like a pulsing disgusted feeling." she said, scrunching up her nose a little. "God, it was awful."
"I'll have to remember to avoid it," Tayne agreed dryly. "Sounds terrible. Speaking of reading, though... I did pick up those books from Nevermore. I'm almost done with them-- do you want them when I'm done?" There wasn't a ton in them that he hadn't already known, but it seemed like Rowena knew less than he did, and at least they were almost entirely accurate. Dorian wouldn't carry and advertise them if they weren't.
"Yeah, definitely." Rowena nodded. "That would be spectacular really. I definitely do not like being caught by surprise and if there's anything else I could avoid, that would be wonderful."
"I can swing them by Sunday," he suggested, thinking of the visit to his mother he had to make with Johan on Saturday. That would probably take up a good portion of the morning, and then he had a feeling Johan would demand a good portion of the afternoon after that... so yeah, better plan for Sunday. "Will you be home?"
"Sure, I can be." she nodded. "Same place you dropped me off at before. Just lemme know what time you'll be coming around and I'll make sure to be there." Rowena smiled. "I really do appreciate this." she added. "I mean... I put you into this position and seems like you're the one helping me out."
"I put myself in that position," Tayne said firmly. "And better me than someone who doesn't know anything about it all, y'know? At least I know what to do, and hell, I can help you out, too, right?"
"Yeah." Rowena allowed. "At least there's that. I do appreciate it though and if there's anything that I can do... just let me know, alright?"
"I will," Tayne promised with a smile. "So how've you been, anyway? Aside from this little scare, anyway." He did kind of want to be friends. It seemed like something you couldn't go through together without at least having some form of connection. So, there was small talk.
"I've been really okay, actually." she told him. "Aside from this, things have been decent enough. I can't complain. Working a lot, but that's expected. I think Walmart likes having me as a slave sometimes. Noah offered me a job and part of me really wants to take it, but I don't want him to get tired of me either." she sighed, shaking her head a little. "He's assured me multiple times that he won't, but you never know. What about you?" Rowena questioned. "How've you been?"
"One of these days I gotta meet this Noah fellow," Tayne teased lightly. "Me? I've been a'ight, I suppose. Getting used to things, I'm sure you know how that goes. I'm all healed up from the other night, by the way." Hell, even if he hadn't run into Justin, he was pretty sure he'd be healed by now, anyway. That shit had been fast.
"Yeah, that is a good little perk to this whole thing." Rowena nodded. "Doesn't take long to get all healed up. I am too." All the bruises had faded and now she was looking like nothing had happened at all.
"Just gotta deal with a lot of other shit, too," Tayne said dryly. "Some of the stuff I was readin'? And hearing from another-- you know, one of us I ran into? Not stuff I wanna deal with...." He lowered his voice a little. "Still don't even know what type that, you know. That I am. Gotta wait a whole damn months for that one...."
Rowena nodded. "It's not a basket of fruit with bows on it." she assured him. "I'd say you get used to it, but I doubt you ever will. I doubt that I ever will." she admitted. "But at least you'll be prepared and next moon I'll be more prepared than I was this one. I don't want a repeat of what happened last time."
"My offer to help with that," Tayne said, quietly again but also hesitantly, "to, like, put bars on your basement window or-- or get you in touch with someone who can help with the c-cage thing, or... something." The idea of the cage still scared him to death, even when it came up in association with someone else.
"Thank you." Rowena said with a little nod. "I really appreciate it. Noah offered too. Maybe I could use both of my strapping boys to help me out." she smiled. "I'm sure he wouldn't mind the extra help. Especially if it got things done faster." she explained. "I really do appreciate you even offering after what happened."
"Well, I'm down with having help and all that, sure," Tayne shrugged. "Just let me know when he wants to w-work on it, and sure." It appeared that he might actually meet the guy he was joking about meeting, earlier, if she was being serious.
"I'll let you know." Rowena nodded. "I'll probably talk to him more about it today or tomorrow. A month doesn't take long to go by, that's for sure." she sighed. "I should probably get back to work or the Walmart trolls will have my head." she muttered. "I'll give you a call when I know more about the cage and what not. And I'll see you Sunday about the books then?"
"Definitely see me Sunday," Tayne agreed. "And I probably oughta get back work on these lunch orders." Not that he'd ever really stopped, honestly, but he had slowed down. "Have a good rest of the day. Feel better, a'ight? Try not to work too hard."
"You too." she smiled. "And I'll try not to work too hard. Maybe." Rowena chuckled. "I'll talk to you later Tayne."
