i'll take a quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide
WHO | Jadyn & Rina
WHERE | Streets of SO --> Rina's home
WHEN | Morning
No one spoke to her, though plenty of people had stopped to stare. The thick, wiry, matted black hair caught their attention first. It had not been washed or properly brushed in weeks and it showed. Her clothes were barely recognizable as her own; originally dark, now they were stained with dirt, grime, blood, and urine. She looked homeless, an eyesore that no one wanted to acknowledge, not when they had their own problems cropping up. Memories long forgotten were resurfacing, though Jadyn was having a more difficult time dealing with them than others.
She stumbled down the street, aware of her name and her son’s, but she was dazed and could not remember how to get home. The pool of drugs that had been in her system was working its way out, causing her to sweat even though the air was cool. Her stomach was churning, leaving her feel unstable and nauseous with every step she took. Still, she continued to move. She couldn’t stop, not now. She couldn’t remember why she had been taken to the darkness or who had done it, not really. The answers were there, beneath a barrier of drugs and magic. It was like several inches of snow, slowly melting to reveal the soggy ground underneath.
A car flew past, the sharp sound of the horn causing Jadyn to jump and fall over into the road. The asphalt scraped her wrist and arm and she grunted in pain and she rolled, scurrying over to the sidewalk. The only thing she found there was a fire hydrant and she clung to it fiercely. It acted like an anchor, something solid to attach her to the earth. It helped; she could feel the water rushing through the metal comforted her, like a voice in the back of her mind telling her everything would be alright.
Her mind rolled, like waves and a face was uncovered, one she had forgotten but knew immediately upon seeing. Rina. She didn’t remember who she was to her right away, but she knew that she was safe.
“Rina,” Jadyn’s voice cracked as she spoke, but there was desperation there. She knew it was foolish, calling the woman’s name, but she couldn’t stop herself. “Rina!”
