Colin moved away Becky shut Amy's window and locked it. She was always careful about that, which made him feel better. Amy and their parents were all she had left.
"Goodnight Amy," he murmured, then moved off to follow Becky. He saw the light in her room and folded himself down.
It was the same everytime he checked on her. He wondered how she knew he was there. He never really made any noise, or tried to come in. He just watched through windows, then left.
Part of him wanted to knock, praying that she could understand and forgive him. Part of him wanted to tell her he wanted to come back, to try and explain why he couldn't and what had happened.
It wasn't safe. Not for her, not for Amy. And he didn't want her to see him like this. Even cleaned up and better fed, he was pale, wan looking and basically a shadow of the brother she knew.
He never, ever wanted her to see him like that. Let her remember him for what he was like before. Before he'd died.
Hearing her talk about Robbie hurt. He wasn't coming back. Guilt for the whole accident and for abandoning Becky, even if he had to, washed over him.
