Gabe had been sleeping wonderfully, truth be told. He wasn’t the kind of guy who was comfortable staying in odd places, which was really any bed outside of his own, and have a restful night. Over the course of his life, whenever he had had to stay in hotels overnight, he typically had to make sure that he got almost no sleep the night before, thereby forcing his body to shut down when he needed it to. But Gabe hadn’t been having those problems since he arrived in Scarlet Oak. It had everything to do with Daveigh spending nearly every night with him here at his hotel. Having something that reminded him of home certainly helped to relax him, but the truth was that Daveigh comforted him in a way that nothing else could.
He didn’t start to stir until he felt movement in the bed next to him. His mind was just barely awake when Daveigh slid out from under his arm. As if on instinct, his hand ran up and down the empty space she had left behind in search for her body. When he didn’t find her, Gabe tucked his arm up under his pillow for added support as he prepared himself for another round of deep sleep. But more rest would not come. He was just barely awake, but he was still conscious enough to hear the soft sob she tried to hold back. Rolling over onto her side, Gabe lazily opened his eyes to look over at his girlfriend.
“Morning, sweetheart.” The smile that rose to his face as lazy and lopsided. “What are you doing all the way over there?” He reached out to hook Daveigh by the waist and pull her out closer. Once she was back by his side, Gabe nuzzled his face into the cook of her neck. He pressed his lips to the skin there and smiled against it. “Are you feeling okay this morning?” He wasn’t entirely sure what was wrong, but he had the vaguest sense that something was off.
