Crossing the line into Scarlet Oak that morning had proved strange. She felt something come over her, something foreign and almost heavy, but as soon as she felt it, the feeling was gone. And with it, several of her memories, though she did not notice that they were missing. Matilda still knew essentially who she was, but she had no recollection of the awful things she had done. She felt content, even happy and though she did not realize those were two very strange emotions for her, the difference lit up her face. Her green eyes practically sparkled and her cheeks were pink from the cool air nipping at them. Matilda did not know the area very well, but she found a cheap hotel easily enough and checked in.
She settled her things and freshened up, changing into something that felt much more comfortable than the jeans she had been wearing before her eyes landed on the phone next to the bed. She honestly could not remember why she had come all of this way, though she was sure it had to do with leaving her brother behind. But why? Maybe it was simply that she wanted to see the rest of the world and didn’t think Jonathon would understand. But he was her brother! Surely, he would find it in his heart to forgive her. The Lord forgave, and so her brother must learn to do so too.
Matilda pulled the phone out of its cradle and dialed the number back home, ignoring the fact that the long distance call would add more charges to her room. She waited for her brother to answer, but there was no such luck. Instead, the call rang out until the voice mail service picked up.
“Jonathon, hey it’s me. I know you’re probably upset with me and I’m sorry. I just wanted to let you know that I’m okay, that everything’s okay. I just got to a small place in Michigan. Scarlet Oak, I think. I’m sorry you’re not home. I’d really like to talk to you. I’ll try again later. Love you. Bye.”
As she replaced the phone, she noticed a shadow in the corner of her eye, but when she turned to focus on it, it was no longer there. Matilda shrugged it off and pulled on her coat. Breakfast would be wonderful and then maybe she’d explore more of the town she had just arrived in. First, she just had to find someone to point her in the direction of a diner so she could have something to eat.
“Excuse me!” She’d barely left the hotel, but she wasn’t shy about stopping the first person she saw. “I just got here and I don’t know where anything is -- can you help me find a place to eat?”
