A Tour of the Campus Who: Day and Hannah Where: U of M When: Midday
Day came jogging up to the parking lot where he was supposed to meet Hannah a few minutes late. Whoops? He just hoped she was still there, because as cool as it was to meet Lua and make plans to go before her firing-squad of friends tomorrow, he really wanted the college connection with Hannah.
He slowed to a stop on the sidewalk and bent over his knees, trying to catch his breath. A helpful little breeze swirled around, stirring his hair and helping him cool off. Physical activity was not something he did a lot of.
Hannah caught sight of Day as he came across the parking lot and she smirked a little when he leaned over upon reaching the sidewalk. "Not a fan of all things physical?" she questioned with a little smirk of playfulness.
"I tend to break things-- easily," Day puffed, though he was getting better already. It was hard to stay winded when one was an air elemental. "So I don't do much-- physical stuff-- so I don't wind up in casts. Sorry I'm late."
She smiled at him and waved it off with a flourish of her hand. "No worries. I'm late constantly." she assured him. "Besides, we've got all the time in the world anyways. So, you ready to look around?" Hannah asked him. "Anything in particular that you'd like to see first?"
"The science building?" Day asked hopefully. "And the dorms. I expect a lot of the social scene occurs in the dorms, yes?" Or fraternity houses, but he didn't think he could get into a fraternity. He couldn't stand the thought of hazing, not even the light hazing groups got away with under bans against such things. "But I really just want to see everything I can and get what insights I can."
Hannah grinned at him. "Well, we'll just start at the science building and work our way around to the dorms." she nodded. "And yes, there is tons and tons of socialness at the dorms. Not to mention at the frat houses that are around town, but you probably already know that. Sorority houses do too, but again that goes without saying. Dorms are good for social ladder climbing though. A lot of people end up in the dorms." Hannah said as she headed down the sidewalk and motioned for him to follow her.
Day followed obediently. "I'm not scheduled to be in the dorms... since I lived here in town, it seemed silly. Should I move?" He frowned, not sure whether he liked that idea or not. It did seem silly, and he wasn't sure how he could explain the desire to his father. Not to mention Christian.
"Nah, it's stupid honestly, I have an apartment with a friend of mine. I'd much rather not be paired with someone I didn't choose like you sometimes get in the dorm rooms. But that's just my opinion." Hannah said as they made their way down the sidewalk. "I couldn't imagine being crammed into some tiny space with some crazy person that I couldn't stand, can you even imagine the grotesque people you might get paired with?"
That got a laugh. "All right," Day agreed, "you think like I do. Do you manage to stay involved in things despite not living on campus, then?" Assuming, as she'd promised, Hannah really could keep him from being a nobody on campus, she had to still be involved with her fellow students on the social scene.
"Parties." Hannah said simply. "Lots and lots of parties. How else?" she grinned. "And there's clubs and all kinds of things like that." she pointed out. "You can never go wrong with some nifty clubs."
"I'm good with parties." Day usually managed to get to be at least one of the centers of attention at some point in every party he went to. "And what kinds of clubs are there?" He gave her a sidelong, curious look. "I don't suppose there's a supernatural one yet...." He hoped not, oh, he hoped not!
"I don't think there is." Hannah said, putting a hand to her cheek and trying to think. "But I'm uber forgetful so there may be. I don't think so. I'm pretty sure there isn't. But there's stuff like at high school, ya know. Math club, drama club, science club, all kinds of things like that."
"I didn't know if the same things translated over," Day admitted. "A friend of mine who graduated last year and came here seemed to think everything was oh-so-different from high school. I don't think he's adjusting well."
"Well things are different, but... not really in a bad way. I mean things were way different at my high school, but there are things that translate over for sure." Hannah told him. "I'm sure some people have a hard time with it."
"Hopefully I won't be one of them," Day said simply. "I've already met a bunch of you college kids, and you certainly don't seem that bad." He flashed her an impish grin.
Hannah smiled. "Oh, really? I'm just horrible." she teased. "The worst college kid ever." She let out a little laugh and reached over to lightly poke him in the shoulder. "You'll do just fine, Day. No worries."
"But I'm a champion worrier," Day protested playfully. "You'll be depriving me of my greatest talent if you tell me not to!" Okay, he was totally exaggerating for the sake of the joke, even though he was, secretly, very much a champion worrier.
She chuckled a little at that. "Worry wart." she teased. "Alright, this is the science building." she said when they approached it. "Quite obviously made apparent by the fact that it says 'Science' right there in huge letters." Hannah smiled. "You like Science?" she figured. He must if that's the first place he wanted to visit.
"I'm thinking I'm going to go into meteorology, and the best place to start that is with physics and nature sciences," Day shrugged. "Besides, science buildings are always so nice and clean. What are you majoring in? Do you know yet?"
"Art." Hannah told him. "I'm an interior designer and I'm going for just about any classes that'll help me further in that." she explained. "Meteorology could be fun, but I don't think I have enough focus. I'm surprised I have enough focus to do what I do, honestly."
"I suppose our attention spans can run the gamut," Day agreed with a smile, and wandered up to the doors into the science building, peering inside. "I'm not as flighty and distractable as I could be, but I'm certainly no earthie."
"Oh I'm flighty and distractable." Hannah told him. "So in advance, please forgive me for the way that I get bored easy and want to move on." she smiled.
"I can always come back myself later," Day shrugged. He lingered a moment more, peering into windows, before he took the hint and climbed back down the stairs and let her lead them on. "Do you have any classes in there? General education type things, or are you done with general ed?"
"Well I'm not completely bored yet." Hannah smiled. "Take a few more minutes if you need them. As for classes, none in the science portion. I'm not really good at it, but I managed to get through with them, thank god." she smiled. "But I come past here a ton so we'll see each other so much you'll be sick of me."
"I doubt I will get sick of a friendly face," Day said archly. "And there's not really much point to waiting around if I can't go inside. Let's see what else there is. What's that building?" He waved a hand at the next one over, starting to walk again. "And where are most of your classes? Is there an art building?" Day was pretty sure Christian would want to know that.
"Well that building that you just looked at is Natural Science, the one of there is Chemistry and the art and architecture building is on the north campus." Hannah explained. "It's definitely a little overwhelming til you get used to it."
"I think I'll be all right," Day said, peering at the chemistry building and wondering what the art building looked like. "Once I get poking around it and get it laid out in my head. I never forget anything, you know, not even how I got to a place, if I've been there before."
Hannah smiled at him. "Well that's awesome." she said. "I don't think I even remember what I had for breakfast, honestly." she admitted. "Course my brain is just all over the place. At least you won't have to carry one of those dreadful maps around with you."
"Do you?" Day asked sympathetically. He knew perfectly well that other people had more trouble than he did remembering things, and he did try to keep that in mind. "Have to carry a map around with you, still, I mean." She'd been here at least a year, maybe two, hadn't she?
She chuckled and shook her head. "No, not anymore, thankfully." she assured him. "And the whole first year I was here, I kept it hidden in the front of my notebook." she smirked.
"How long have you been attending?" Day asked curiously. He wasn't honestly sure how old she was-- was he talking to a freshman or a senior? Or, god forbid, a graduate student? Wouldn't that be exciting.
"A couple years." she admitted. "Just finished out my second actually, going into my third. I hope I don't look that old." she chuckled.
"I'd assumed you were a freshman," Day said with a charming smile. "Going into your second year. Still plenty young, I'm sure. So how do you like it here? Aside from the parties in the dorms and avoiding science classes."
She chuckled. "Well I'm glad that I look that young." Hannah grinned. "I like it here though. It's really a nice school. Not a bad place to meet people, most of the teachers are cool. Of course there are a couple of people that totally bore me. Like one of the math teachers makes my brain hurt just looking at him."
"Hopefully you don't have to take any math classes, then," Day said, amused. "Do you have a lot of friends?" That was the question he cared most about. Classes he wasn't worried about, he'd breeze through those like he always did. It was the people.
"Tons." Hannah admitted. "I think I'm closest with like... one though. I like a plethora of people around me, but Monica, my roommate, she's pretty much the only one I really divulge deep dark, don't tell anyone kinds of secrets to." she smirked. "I think everyone's got one of those kinds of friends though. Don't worry, buddy, we'll get you introduced around here and you'll have so many friends you won't know what to do with them."
"I never don't know what to do with friends," Day smirked, back, though he didn't know who he'd tell deep, dark secrets to.... Christian, Tilly, and Chrissy were probably his dearest friends, but both of them he also kept at least a couple secrets from. Nastasiya might know them, but she was only an acquaintance, and he hadn't shared them on purpose. Was that another of those... weirdnesses? Did it go with not liking dating and sex, or was it different? "I do appreciate it, though. I'm looking forward to starting up here, and getting involved...."
She smiled. "You'll be so involved in no time that you really won't know how you were ever not involved." Hannah told him. "Come on, I'll show you the rest of the campus and maybe we can grab a bite to eat."
Putting aside the worries about himself for the time being and putting on a bright smile-- it was what he was best at, after all-- Day looped his arm into hers and said lightly, "That sounds like a wonderful idea. Lead on, Hannah."
