i'm going home back to the place where i belong.
Who: Daveigh and Harper.
Where: Harper's apartment above Sherry's Bakery.
When: Evening.
Driving from New York to Scarlet Oak was not easy, it was a long drive especially with no one to share the driving with so Daveigh hadn't even tried to do it in one straight drive. She'd driven a couple of hours the night before and stopped at a motel when she'd started to feel tired. Of course she hadn't managed to get much sleep, her mind had just kept running over the fight between her and Gabe and she'd cried until she couldn't cry anymore, at some point she'd fallen asleep. She'd set a wake-up call with the front desk, she would have used her cell but she'd not looked at it since she'd left the city because she knew what she'd find there and she couldn't face those texts yet. Despite not being hungry she'd forced herself to have breakfast before she'd set off on the road again, she had to take care of herself now that she was pregnant, even if all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry until she was numb.
Being alone in the car wasn't ideal, it gave her time to think and all that did was make her upset all over again. She couldn't turn the radio up too loud because then she wouldn't hear her GPS give her directions so it wasn't even like she could lose herself in music. Daveigh did her best to focus on the road and it helped a bit. She did everything she could to keep her mind on other things and not think about what had happened the night before. She had considered calling Harper to tell her she was coming but dismissed the thought before it finished forming because that would mean using her cell and she still couldn't bring herself to look at it. She wasn't ready to deal with the missed calls and texts that she knew it would display on the screen.
She stopped once or twice on the drive but only when she needed gas or to use a restroom otherwise she just kept heading for Scarlet Oak. She made good time and soon she found herself in familiar territory. Somehow being so close to home only made her feel worse, she felt on the verge of tears as she saw the town appear ahead of her on the horizon. She fought to hold back the tears, she did not want to turn up on her sister's doorstep crying her eyes out because she knew that would just make Harper worry about her and she already knew she was going to cause her big sister to worry enough without being in a state when she got there.
It was at that moment that the radio decided to play one of her favourite songs came on the radio, a song that immediately made her think of Gabe, it brought the night before screaming back into her head and she felt her eyes stinging with the threat of tears. She leaned over to turn the radio off, taking her eyes off the road for a moment as she passed the town's welcome sign.
She sat back up and looked at the road ahead, her GPS suddenly spoke and made her jump, she looked for the turning it indicated and found herself marvelling at how pretty the town looked at this time of year. She smiled to herself as she took the turning and then realised it was far too quiet in the car. Daveigh looked down at the radio and puzzled expression crossed her face, she never turned the radio off in the car. Before she could do anything about it the GPS announced she was nearing her destination. She found a parking spot easily and turned off the engine before getting out and stretching her legs. She walked towards the door and knocked on it.
She fidgeted as she waited for it to be answered, her barely contained excitement beginning to bubble out of her with each moment that ticked by. She reached into her purse and pulled out her cell, her fingers unlocked the keypad and she stared at the screen. Why on earth did she have so many texts and missed calls? Before she could investigate further the door opened in front of her. She looked up and smiled widely at her sister. "Surprise," she said as she launched at her big sister to hug her, the cell in her hand momentarily forgotten in favour of a proper greeting.
