A yawn forced its way out past her lips and she stretched, her hands grabbing hold of the pillow on top of her head and tossing it to the side. Harper groaned from the movement; her head was achy, like her skull was screwed on too tight. Did she drink too much last night? It wouldn’t surprise her. She rolled over and kicked the blankets off to the side, barely opening her eyes. If she had, she might have seen that she was not in her room at all. She might have even realized that she didn’t recognize this particular bedroom. But she didn’t. Harper slumped past the door and trudged into the adjoining bathroom where she flipped on the tap as hot as it could go. While waiting for the water to heat up, she glanced in the mirror to assess the damage. Her eyes were a little puffy and her hair -- When did I go red?! -- was sticking up in the strangest places. She scrutinized her new hair color for about a minute before she shrugged and splashed the hot water onto her face.
Still oblivious that she was not in her apartment, Harper stepped into the living room wearing nothing but a t-shirt that was too big for her. The shirt covered all of her important parts, though she didn’t recognize it right away. The smell of breakfast hit her nose and she looked around for the culprit. A pan full of sizzling bacon was left on the stove unattended and she crossed over to check on it. She grabbed the fork next to the stove and poked at the bacon, making sure it was crisping in all the right places, when she heard the door to the apartment open up. She leaned around the corner and saw Josh coming up with a gray cat hot on his heels. Now, it became a little clearer to her that she was in his apartment.
“Gone long?” She asked as she finished the bacon. Eggs were already made and she could smell toast over in the toaster. “You know, you can catch the place on fire walking away like that.” She scooped out the bacon and divvied it onto two waiting plates. Even if he had stepped away, she was impressed by his starting breakfast for them. It felt so natural, so right that she didn’t even give it a second thought. Instead, she caught the toast as it popped out of the toaster and spread butter on the pieces before adding it to the plates.
“What is up with you?” She looked down at the cat who kept pawing at her leg. The thing was mewing incessantly and kept looking at her with large, amber eyes as if it were trying to communicate. “Absolutely not. You get cat food, remember? Not people food.” She glanced over to Josh and carried the plates to the table, sitting them next to one another. “You’ve been spoiling him, haven’t you?” Harper grinned and crossed over to Josh. She wasn’t even thinking about not remembering last night or why the apartment suffered from a severe lack of girly things; all she knew was this feeling that clicked in her mind. She was with her boyfriend and nothing else mattered. Her arms looped up and around his neck, causing her shirt to rise a couple of inches and eliminating any distance between them. It was the most natural thing in the world, and it led Harper to press a warm kiss to his lips.
“Good morning.”
