Morning arrived and with it the sound of her children stirring in their rooms. Lida rolled over in her bed, a pleasant smile playing on her lips. She knew Toby and Annabelle were just waking, just starting to play until she came to fetch them for breakfast. She stretched between her silky sheets and was toying with the idea of how she ought to be sharing this quiet little moment with someone when she caught the tiniest little whisper in the back of her mind. The tickle caught her off guard and she paused, trying to latch onto it, to hear what was said, but it was like trying to hold onto water with her hands.
She simply shook her head and moved to get out of her bed so she could prepare breakfast for her little ones. Before going downstairs, she peeked into their rooms only to be greeted by two brilliant little smiles. There were no uneasy glares from her daughter, no thoughts of werewolves ruining her life, just simple happiness. Lida continued downstairs, the lush carpet warm between her toes. The house was quiet except for the children playing and an unusual sound in the back of her mind. It was very near to a soft rumble, though she couldn’t quite place it.
Once in the kitchen, Lida began scrambling eggs for Toby and Annabelle. She idly sipped on a glass of her favorite blood as she cooked, ignoring the unquiet that bubbled in the back of her mind. Breakfast was ready and she watched her children eat with a bright smile on her face. “So, what is the plan for today?” She asked them.
“The park!” Annabelle chimed through a mouthful of eggs and toast.
“Then finish up and put on some warm clothes!”
Lida knew that she should have eaten something a bit more than the few sips she had, but her children were so happy that she couldn’t stand the thought of forcing them to wait for another minute. She dressed herself and followed them downstairs, sure that their jackets were zipped up tight. The static in her mind became stronger, even louder, as she approached the door. Lida stopped and looked around her home, sure that there would be something to hint at why this buzzing was so incessant, but nothing jumped out at her.
“Mother?” Toby looked up at her with large, questioning eyes.
“Everything’s fine darling. Let’s go!” She urged her children through the door and closed it behind her. The second she made contact with the sidewalk, however, Lida realized that everything was not fine. The noise in her mind became thunderous, a horde of screams and shouts that seemed to manifest around her, causing the very earth below her feet to shake and tremble. Toby and Annabelle shrieked and ran a little ways away, but Lida could not follow them. The sidewalk had liquefied around her feet, trapping her up to the ankles. She stumbled and fell over, and it was then she distinguished the sounds that were coming from the noise.
TRAITOR. KILLER. YOU ARE NO CHILD OF MINE.
Lida’s eyes grew wide with fear as she recognized the wrath of her element. She did not remember skipping dinner the night before, but that coupled with her lack of blood this morning had allowed for her defenses to fall. She could have slapped herself. It had been centuries since she made this mistake. The ground around her was churning, pulling her deeper into its grasp. For the first time in forever, she felt fear pierce through her like ice.
“Children, find help!”
