Where Farren got angry and lashed out at others Sam was very much the opposite, retreating into himself and cowering away from the world, apologetic and remorseful even if he hadn't technically done anything wrong. In Sam's eyes he was always at fault, in one way or another it could always be traced back to him and it always paid for him to apologise. Those were the traits Jo and the others were trying to ease him out of but that was much easier said than done, it wasn't so simple or straightforward to break years of habit and conditioning and it was entirely likely Sam was always going to fall back on that. Apologising, shrinking back from a strike that wasn't going to come, hanging his head and dropping his eyes. Submitting.
With a nod he kept hold of the box and moved forward so he could keep up when Farren moved to head on out of the aisle in which they were standing. As he did so he remembered what they'd been trying to teach him, that talking to people wasn't bad -- so long as he wasn't challenging in any way, that was always ringing in the back of his brain like a bell -- and maybe it would help to change the subject. It was his fault Farren had felt awkward, after all. "What kind of meat?" he asked then, because it was a new topic but it was related to what Farren had said and therefore showed that he'd been paying attention. It wasn't the most thrilling thing to ask but Sam's mind didn't work that way anyway. Better to play it safe.
