Out in the open where there were all kinds of threats and dangers Carter was infinitely more aware than he was sitting in that booth in that diner. That had a lot to do with the fact that he didn't realise the woman at the counter nearby had her attention fixed on him and it was only when she spoke to him that he realised she was there at all. Out of the corner of his eye he had seen her take her seat there, certainly, but it had been subconscious. It was only when she spoke and he turned to look at her that he really saw her. Carter smiled when he heard her and chuckled quietly more to himself than anything else.
"I don't normally eat food like this," he said at first, glancing down at the plate before him for a moment and then back up at the woman at the counter. "When I do I don't see the sense in rushing it." With the slightest rise and drop of his shoulders Carter offered the woman a shrug. Rushing any food was foolish anyway, he knew, but that was beside the point here, when he was indulging in a meal he wouldn't see the likes of again for several weeks at least. "It's more of a treat this way."
That would have put a smile on his mother's face, he knew, she had always said the same sort of thing herself whenever she partook of something unhealthy. There were Bennetts out there who never ate anything like this, not even as a reward after a particularly harrowing hunt, but Carter and his immediate family had never been among that number.
