can we bridge this chasm between us?
Who: Keelin & Kahlan + NPC doctors/nurses
Where: U of M Hospital
When: Morning
Leaving the comfort of her apartment was truly the last thing that Keelin wanted to do, but with a pregnant sister living with her, it was more than a little necessary. Even though she couldn’t be blamed or even partially considered at fault for what went on during the homecoming dance, she still felt guilty about leaving her sister to her own devices for so long -- had it really been so many days? Magic was a powerful aide to her guilt; she was a witch, was she not? So then, why couldn’t she have prevented what had happened or, at the very least, been aware that it was happening? To top it all off, Kahlan was growing even more pregnant by the day and required a lot more medical attention to ensure everything was developing healthily.
One might argue that Keelin’s involvement in Kahlan’s life and her pregnancy now was to make up for the past twenty-five years of absence, and they’d be absolutely right. Nothing could ever make up for Keelin not seeking out her older sister -- in fact, neither one of them even knew where to begin with their oldest sibling -- but that didn’t mean she would ever stop trying. Now that Kahlan was in her life, Keelin was doing her best to ensure that she stayed, and that included helping take care of the niece or nephew that was growing in Kahlan’s womb.
The drive to the hospital was mostly quiet, but the younger blonde did not seem to think much of it. Her thoughts were preoccupied with the lingering feelings of dread that the high school left coiled in her stomach. Everyone standing around on the sidewalk suddenly looked like Cheyenne and her vampire boyfriend, every sudden movement reminded her of the quick, jerky movements of the raptors; Keelin remained remarkably composed considering that she wanted to scream at everything that moved. Burying her head in the sand was a much more appealing idea than risking another dinosaur attack.
“Is today just another check up?” Keelin asked, shifting the car into park. She was never sure if Kahlan’s silence was simply a trait she had picked up over the years or if she was in a tense sort of mood. Anytime the baby was brought up, silence was sure to follow and it made her wonder just how her sister felt on the matter. Most women were excited, or at least she assumed they were. She supposed, though, that it would be difficult to be excited about the arrival of a child when the father was not in the picture. She was unsure of all the details as to why he wasn’t there, but it was more than clear that her sister was on her own. Why else would she be here alone, sleeping on the couch of the sister she had not seen in over twenty years? She straightened the chains around her neck after unbuckling her seat belt and watched her sister carefully.
