This wasn't how he'd imagined this conversation going, not that he'd really imagined much of a conversation at all given how little he spoke as a general rule, usually only when he was spoken to. Then again with the Summers Pack that happened much more frequently than it had back in Montana, the wolves here were more inclined to speak to him rather than over him and that was something he was definitely struggling to get used to. When they did speak he managed to misstep somehow, proving his inexperience with the practise in general.
Maybe he should just keep his mouth shut.
Jo didn't believe him when he said it might have been the same female he'd told her about during the high school incident and she was right not to. Wolves weren't very good at lying to one another, they were honest creatures, brutally so at times, and Sam had been instructed to always tell the truth. Always. Instead of apologising and fumbling his way through a messy explanation as he normally would have Sam held his tongue and didn't say anything else about it because if Jo was in any way inclined to let it slide then that was what he would prefer. Anything to keep her from wandering out into the trees to find whatever had startled him in the first place.
"Okay," he said, nodding his head. "I'll be careful." It was entirely likely he would just stay in the house for a while. That was probably for the best.
