A week had past since Nora rushed into the hospital to see her sister and Zoie was still not ready to go home. She knew that her sister should be ready to return home in a day or so, but a large part of her was terrified that Zoie may not ever be ready to go back home with her. Moving back to Scarlet Oak was supposed to have been a good thing, despite Nora's original intentions. Yes, she had been tracking what she thought to be wolves responsible for her family's destruction, but this was where she and Zoie were born. This was their very first home and she felt as though it was meant to symbolize something, a return to roots or something deeper. This wasn't supposed to be the place where her sister was endangered and their very livelihood jeopardized.
Nora barely left Zoie's side; once they convinced Angela Irving that everything was under control and Zoie was going to be fine, that is. Angela had only left town a day ago, but already Nora felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Guilt still plagued her, making her feel as though she had swallowed a ball of lead and nothing could reach it to relieve the pressure it caused. She doubted it would ever dissipate, but that was the good thing. She needed it to keep herself true to the mental vow she made. How she ever thought she could balance a normal life with Zoie along with hunting, she couldn't know. The truth was, and it hit her with such a force that she felt almost crippled, she could not do both, not fully. A choice was made and, as always, Zoie won out.
The trip to the grocery store was really just a quick trip to pick up a few necessities: chocolate and flowers for her sister. She had done a decent job of making sure the flowers in Zoie's room stayed fresh and that the supply of sweets was never far from reach. Thankfully, her sister's friend had brought a secret stash of baked goods to start off with, which gave Nora a starting point. Her arms were laden with bags of sweets and a new bouquet of flowers to give to Zoie today (and to store at home for her sister's return trip) in addition to the large purse that she was fighting to keep on her shoulder while trying to neatly stuff her change into her wallet. The only problem was that she wasn't watching where she was going, so when she bumped into someone, the wallet fell out of her hands and the change exploded outwards, raining on the sidewalk loudly.
"Sorry," she still didn't look up at who it was she walked into. Instead, she just hunkered down and began to pick up the change with her almost-free hand.
