Mondays for most people meant a dreary day of dragging themselves through another work shift, probably because they were just coming off of a weekend where they wished they had more time to themselves. Emyli didn't have a set up weekend. She worked or she didn't. The days all seemed to run together and with a little pharmaceutical help, she was able to enjoy every moment whether on the clock or off. She prided herself on remembering the nights she was supposed to work or when she promised to pick up a shift here or there, but that was the extent of her work ethic. She hadn't seen Aiden since the whole chair-on-fire thing and somewhere in the thick haze of her mind, she hoped he really hadn't been fired. He was one of the best people to work with and she would be a little sad if he didn't make a triumphant return.
Her back was turned towards the bar and her eyes were locked on the bottles set up on the shelf, as if she were searching for a customer's order. Truthfully, she was looking without seeing anything. Whatever was coursing through her system at the moment had slowed things down to a crawl. The dim lights had blurry tails coming off of them as she moved and the thump of the music reverberated through her chest, making it feel as though her ribs were rattling against one another. She couldn't tell if it was the jukebox or a live band; she had known when she walked in hours earlier, but at this point she had forgotten. Not that it really mattered; the beat crashing into her felt nice and acted as a way for her to keep time.
"How about that drink?"
Emyli slowly spun around, a lazy quirk playing in her smile. The guy across from her might have been annoyed that the bartender was too stoned to properly function, but his agitation was lost on her. Apparently, it was short-lived as well when his eyes fell to the vest she wore. It hardly qualified for a shirt, revealing the animal print of her bra easily. The flash of lust burning in his eyes was clear to Emyli and it caused her smile to deepen, turning more coy than lazy. She didn't remember what he ordered, but she grabbed the nearest bottle of whiskey and poured a shot. She moved to hand him the glass, but just as his fingers brushed hers, she pulled the glass back to her lips and downed it in a swift motion.
"How about that drink." She turned with a laugh that died quickly in her throat. Out of the corner of her eye, she thought spotted a vision of red hair. She tried to convince herself it was only a hallucination, a byproduct of everything swimming inside of her veins, but she couldn't quite shake the bolt of fear that had turned her insides to ice. She couldn't steel herself enough to glance over.
