The man that approached her looked rather like what a giant would look like, at least that's what Alicia thought. But it wasn't his sheer size or girth that captured her attention; there was something about him, something that made her think he was different than anyone else. She'd only caught flashes of this feeling before, sometimes when she was in a large crowd of people, but never one on one with someone. She blinked slowly as he approached her and she wondered if this feeling she was picking up on was something that he felt too -- was that why he looked at her like that? Alicia was entirely intrigued by this bizarre feeling. She never felt anything like this when she was spending time with her father or one of the governesses.
When the man spoke, Alicia's lips twitched slightly as if they were going to curl down into a frown, but they did not move very much. Her face was essentially blank and expressionless as she regarded him. She idly shook her head, her fine hair sliding off of her shoulder. "No," Her accent was still quite thick, but she knew more than enough English to speak like a native child. "Father is busy and I have no governess yet. Nanny is like governess, yes? Father says as soon as we are settled, I will have a new one. One to show me around town and how the American children live."
"What are you?" Alicia asked the question with blatant curiosity, but no more tact than she would have asked him what his name was. There was clearly nothing wrong with the question in her mind. She thought everyone was special in some way. Her father could do things with plants, she knew though she wasn't sure how. Just like she wasn't sure how or why she could pick up on his dreams from time to time or why she knew things about her governesses when she looked into the dregs of a cup of tea. Things just were.
