Zoie was awake now, and that meant that Nora could rightfully step away and get some fresh air. Well. Not exactly. She definitely needed the fresh air, but she realized she also needed to get away from Zoie for just a moment to catch a breath. Zoie wanted to know where she had been, what had kept her away and Nora was well on the verge of telling her sister everything. Everything. That she was a hunter, that she was out hunting a wolf and killing him, that she almost got killed herself… But she didn’t. At the last minute, she changed her mind and her story. She didn’t think that Zoie, as frail as she was, could handle the truth. Not now at any rate.
She used the excuse that she needed some dinner to separate herself from her sister and her mother. Angela Irving was here and now she wasn’t leaving until Zoie was allowed to leave the hospital too. Nora was thankful in the sense that it gave her a chance to pull herself away and find some relief outside. She didn’t want to need a moment to herself, but her guilt was crushing her in that room. She cried for a moment inside, but she quickly stopped her tears and forced herself to be the older sister again, no matter how difficult or how painful it was.
Now that she was alone, Nora could let her anguish slip through. A wracking sob tore through her the moment she was certain she was alone. She let her tears rush forth and leave hot streaks running down her cheeks as she leaned up against the building. The wall was the only thing holding her up; she felt as though she could just sink down into the ground and disappear forever. Zoie would be better off, wouldn’t she? She needed someone she could always depend on, not someone who lied to her. Everything she had done wrong was gnawing at her insides, destroying her, but Nora could do nothing about it except weep.
She’d have to stop, wouldn’t she? She’d have to stop hunting. It meant letting go of everything. Letting go of the attack, of Charles and Christopher, of all the need for vengeance that bubbled beneath the surface. Nora wasn’t sure she could, but thinking of Zoie, alone and almost dying… She had to. For Zoie. Everything had to be for Zoie.
