Kammie quite liked Scarlet Oak so far. Granted, she had only been in town a day and the argument could be made that she only enjoyed it because she knew Tanith was here somewhere, but still she believed she would enjoy her time regardless. Arriving in town had been simple enough, as was finding a hotel to stay at for a few nights, but she now found herself at a loss for what to do next. Narrowing down Tanith’s location down to Scarlet Oak had taken months; there was nothing to say that pinpointing her in town wouldn’t take an equally long amount of time. She wouldn’t be able to afford the hotel for very long, but did that mean she should try to settle down? The answer may have been obvious (rent an apartment on a monthly lease until she found her sister) but she had tossed the options back and forth in her mind no less than a hundred times. Two things were certain: she needed a job, and she needed to locate another Finder.
When the afternoon arrived, Kammie had grown restless. Keeping the balcony door open was simply not cutting it; Air called out for her to step outside and go for a walk. The thought had occurred to ask the concierge desk about interesting places in town, but she decided instead that it would be more fun to wander.
As soon as her feet hit the sidewalk, she let the direction of the breeze pull her toward the right. She smiled as the air flowed around her. After a few minutes, however, she had to pull her sweater tighter around her middle as a chill took to her skin. The lowering temperature of fall was not enough to deter her from being outside, not even after a full hour of walking from Ann Arbor into Scarlet Oak proper. It was small, which she liked; it reminded her of the village where she had lived in Tibet; then again, Scarlet Oak resembled something more like New York City compared to the village.
She had barely rounded the street corner when a wondrous smell hit her nose. It smelt like every single flower that Kammie knew the name of, and then some. She allowed the scent to lead her until she was standing in front of an outdoor bouquet of flowers. Leaning down, she breathed deep their smell. Kammie had always loved fresh-cut flowers. They provided just the right amount of nature to a room without overwhelming her with the presence of Earth. Deciding that a few flowers would add a nice, homey touch to her hotel room, she went inside. Kammie had been in a florist shop before and she was aware of the sensation that would greet her once she stepped inside; even still, she required a deep, centering breath as the Air inside her bounded against the Earth that surrounded her. It was a faintly uncomfortable sensation, like wearing a sweater that was slightly smaller than what you were used to, but nowhere near unbearable. Kammie concentrated her attention instead on the flowers that lined the walls, trying her best to narrow down what she’d like to bring home with her.
