cross the open spaces
Who: Charlene and Roxy
Where: Outside the high school
When: Later afternoon
Charlene wanted to surprise Roxy. According to the texts that she had gotten (she had learned that she needed to not only leave the phone on to get the messages, but plug that little metal thing into the outlet and let it stay there) her penguin was tied up at the place called the high school. From what she had read, that was the place that the oldest of the landwalker children went to learn. Now why exactly Roxy was spending all of her time there was an entirely different question. Roxy was too old to go to school there and even if she had been the right age then she only needed to be there at certain times of the day. Definitely not with the ambulance. Just thinking about the ambulance sent a shiver down Charlene’s spine, her hand ghosting over to touch her side at the memory of when she had needed to be put into one of them. But it made no sense for her to be afraid of them. They had not hurt her and besides! Roxy drove around in one. Nothing that Roxy was part of could actually be bad in a way that would bring her harm… it was a good thing. Just not a good thing to have sitting outside of a building that was full of children. Charlene just wondered why she was there, not understanding the texts explaining or the newspapers she had seen.
But it did not actually matter really, unless it turned out to be funny and then she wanted to know all about it. Until then… she was weaving her way through the crowded streets as best she could with a bag slung over her shoulder. It was dripping a little, but none of the people around her really seemed to notice that since they were all focused on their conversations with each other or staring at the school and the uniformed men who were keeping them away from it. Why were they keeping them away? For a moment she stopped and peered towards the building, wondering if she could see anything – but in that moment her eyes spotted ambulances. Not just one, but a little cluster of them, which gave her pause. How was she supposed to know which one was Roxy’s?
There! A wide smile broke out on Charlene’s face when she spotted a very familiar head of pink hair lingering near the back of one of the vehicles. There were other people around her, but Charlene paid them no mind as she made her way over. She nearly tripped a few times thanks to people getting into her path – yes they were in her way, it did not matter that she was weaving around like she had been drinking – but managed to stay upright without dropping her bag. Her hand came up in a frantic wave when Roxy looked her way, her smile returning, and yes – she threw herself right at her for a tight hug. When she pulled back she pecked a kiss at her lips. Her notebook came out of the bag next and she scribbled a quick note. ’Hi Roxy, found you! Brought you lunch too.’ In the form of a freshly caught fish wrapped in seaweed.
