The smell of a mountain lion came off the woman in waves. For a short second, Julian considered that she'd simply encountered one and that the smell was not actually her. It was quickly dismissed when it became clear that the smell was coming from the woman instead of off her clothes, for example. Julian's sense of smell was his first method of judging others and he wasn't threatened by her, though he wasn't put at ease by her either. As she took a donut - followed by a couple more uniformed cops - Julian followed where she pointed to a desk covered in little scraps of paper and notes. Paperwork didn't bother him as much as the fact that this was going to be more or less mindless drone work. And the problem with mindless drone work was it opened up other parts of his brain. Parts of his brain that worked with memories, for example.
"Right," he nodded as he set the box down on the edge of the desk the female cop, on top of a pile of paper. He grabbed another donut and then spun the chair around to face her desk. Chewing this one a little more thoroughly this time - though no less bitterly - he glanced at the name plate on her desk and committed it to memory, correcting calling her a 'cop' earlier and reminding himself it was 'detective'. "Officially?" Julian quirked an eyebrow. "It's because I have a good eye for discerning the bullshit reports from the truth. Truthfully? It's because I couldn't keep my temper in check and laid some dude out. He hit me first," Julian clarified. "But, apparently, that's not a good enough reason for my boss. As far as his feelings towards me...well, I can't really comment on that. Exasperation seems to be his primarily feeling."
Teetering on the hind legs of his chair, Julian shoved the rest of the donut into his mouth. "How about you? Not your department? Or...?" It was mostly beat cops that worked the school. 'Detective' sounded like she did something in a specialized department like narcotics or vice or something. Did the city even have a vice squad? It was a pretty tame town. Or at least had been until the recent demon attacks and slew of murders and the bombings and...okay, maybe not so tame.
