the elemental, the witch, and the wall
WHO | Harper & Kahlan
WHERE | Outside of the high school
WHEN | Before lunchtime
"Miss, I'm sorry that your grandmother is inside of the school, but we are doing everything we possibly can to get her out." The officer that Harper had chosen to berate for losing her grandmother was, well, pitiful. She picked him on purpose because of the way he lingered outside the larger groups of officers and the way he looked completely lost. To her, that meant he could break easily and would give her some sort of clue as to what was going on. She thought his eyes were starting to water a little bit at her constant badgering.
"Yeah, well, everything just isn't getting the fucking job done, is it?" She scowled at him, feeling Fire fuel her rage.
"Please," His hands came up clasped together as he nearly begged. "We're doing the best we can. We don't know what this thing is or how it even got started. Just..." He trailed off and Harper thought he was going to start crying on the spot. But then she realized that the reason he stopped talking was that they were no longer alone; another officer, one that Harper recognized immediately, approached them. Shit.
"Mitchell, go maintain the wall towards the south-end of the building. I'll finish this up." Was that a flicker of a grin on Officer Man-Lady's face? She couldn't tell, but Officer Mitchell looked like Christmas had come early as he scampered away to follow orders. Harper rolled her eyes.
"Now that we're alone--" she started, the taunt barely off of her tongue before the officer cut her off.
"You have exactly twenty seconds to leave the premises or I will be forced to place you under arrest." The officer's shoulders were back, her chin high in the air.
Harper laughed. "For what? Standing outside the school with everyone else in Scarlet Oak? Kind of a double standard you've got there."
"For hindering an investigation. Twelve seconds."
She wanted to slap the woman in front of her, just bring up a ball of fire and set the woman's hair ablaze. But she didn't want to go to jail. Again. So Harper did the only thing a mature young woman would do: she stuck her tongue out at the woman and walked away. She acted as though she was leaving the school altogether, but once she passed by a crowd of panicked parents, she ducked behind them and ran around until she was out of Officer Man-Lady's line of sight. She thought it was a generally smooth get away plan -- until she stumbled and rolled into the mud. Groaning, Harper pushed herself back onto her feet and tried to wipe the mud from her pants and out of the corner of her eye she saw someone standing not so far away.
A closer look revealed someone else she knew: Kahlan. Although what her employee was doing here at the school was beyond her. Her brow furrowed and she stomped towards her, trying to figure out exactly what she was doing so close to the wall and why she looked so damned shady over there.
"So, are you the one making the wall or are you trying to bust in?" Harper drawled as she drew up even with the Australian.
