Ego wasn't really something Sam was all that familiar with, for all that he'd been exposed to it within his pack in Montana. Those wolves thrived on their egos, reputation and standing meant everything to them, pack animals who very literally fought for their rank within the group. The hierarchy was established just as it would be in the wild and those closer to the top lived for praise and success and any kind of triumph over anything, whether it was claiming the last scrap of food on offer or winning a very real fight. Sam had been the focus of several of those little contests but even so the concept of ego didn't really make much sense to him, it didn't really register. For all that he could still sense that Jo was happy and that was enough to help him relax, if only a little.
Those words she uttered managed to surprise him though, not to the point where he physically started as was so often the case but he blinked and glanced upwards for a moment all the same. She sounded relieved. Why? Sam couldn't understand why she would have any need to be relieved, especially not about anything he might say or do. Omegas didn't have that much of an impact.
