Sam had been confused by this situation with the school from the get go, and what made things worse was that he didn't know what to do to help. He didn't even know if there was anything he could do, and all he really wanted to do was prove that August hadn't made a mistake in letting him stay. There hadn't been many opportunities for Sam to prove he wasn't the waste of space his parents and pack back in Montana had always told him he was and this was just one more time when he didn't know what to do with himself, just one more time when he felt like they had all been right about him.
At the sound of his name he turned his head, his hair whipping around his brow and ears gently in the cool breeze. He'd meant to bring a hat. It had completely slipped his mind in his haste to get out the door and come here. He spotted Jo quickly enough and made his way over to her, avoiding other people in his way as much as possible, weaving around them, giving them wide berths as and when he could. When he reached the fence he was immediately uncomfortable with their positions, how Jo would have to look up at him and he down at her. That was wrong. Backwards. So he lowered himself to the ground, crossing his legs under him, his shoulders hunched and his posture slouched so that he sat a little closer to the floor than he otherwise would have if he'd straightened his back.
"There was another wolf," he said to her, his eyes on her knees. "In the woods, behind the house. It didn't come over the line but it was close." That was what Sam had come here to say, what he had travelled all the way from the house to tell someone in the pack, and now that he had said it he wasn't sure what else to do with himself.
