We love that game but we never play
Who: Zeke and Brodie
Where: Outside of SOHS
When: Afternoon
All things considered, it was surprising that Zeke hadn't been to the high school yet. It wasn't that it had slipped his mind - though with him, that was always a possibility - but rather, he'd actually been at work. His boss, Satan incarnate, had insisted that the entire staff show up on Monday and Tuesday, regardless of whether or not they had loved ones inside the building. Now that had been one of the harder days of Zeke's career, as he didn't deal with tension well, ever, no one wanted to be there, and nothing was getting done anyway. The paper was originally going to feature a few articles on Homecoming and the surrounding events, but that was out of the window now. So, Zeke wasted most of the day on Facebook and the Internet, texting Holly when he could, until he could make a run for the door.
Now, though, standing in front of the school that should have been his alma mater, Zeke couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic, a feeling immediately pushed aside. There were so many worried parents and family here, awaiting news on their loved ones. This put Scarlet Oak High School on the map, and for all the wrong reasons. He walked a slow perimeter around the building, avoiding the crowds, the air elemental in him claustrophobic at the thought. He also avoided all the various news crews stationed around - though Zeke had a journalism degree, there was a reason why he was a copy editor, not a reporter. The length some of these people went in the name of getting the story sickened him.
In the midst of all this, seeing a familiar face was more than welcome. A small smile spread across Zeke's face as he saw Brodie across the way, flagging his friend down. "Hey man," his tone was more than a little sheepish, running his hand over his hair. Wait, when was the last time he saw Brodie, in person, and not just talked to him via text? "What brings you out here?"
