Trent's laughter was slight and shallow, a tired sort of sound that wasn't nearly as heartfelt as he'd been aiming for. Damn. He was silently glad when she changed the subject to herself -- his favourite subject, honestly -- and he actually felt a little more awake when she shifted it that way. That was good. Having something more positive to focus on was good, a welcome distraction from how he felt, how his entire family felt, the whole pack, and the mess they were all in. The mention of her heading home for a bit later that night and not only working some magic to try and help in her own way, but also to rest, had him shifting in his seat a little, getting himself a little more comfortable -- or less uncomfortable, that was more accurate -- as he tilted his head to regard her again, with a small smile on his face.
"Maybe I can join you," he said, and he realised that the small smile had faded already. It was too difficult to keep it up in the face of what was happening. "Maybe it'll do me some good to get away from all this for a while, and they already told me to clock off at the end of the night." He'd been working pretty much constantly since this had all started and his superiors weren't too happy about that. It was all hands on deck, certainly, but they couldn't have their people burning themselves out. "If that's okay, I mean. I don't want to be a distraction." At any other time he might have sounded mischievous when he said that but not now. Not when two of his siblings were stuck inside that school with no foreseeable rescue on the cards.
