That was one of the first things that had drawn Trent to Venus. That confidence, that sense and air of belonging, the self-assurance, and how comfortable she was in her own skin. Unashamed. Natural. In a way he had envied her for it, as he envied his brother for his own particular brand of confidence, and the sad truth of the matter was that he still envied them both to this day. Not that he was admitting that, not even to himself, but it was there all the same, deep down, buried beneath any number of layers of forced indifference and ignorance to anything being wrong in any shape or form. Trent didn't have issues. He did not. Simple as that. When Venus climbed into the back of the ambulance he turned and twisted enough to be able to see her where she came to settled on the gurney, giving her a small, affectionate smile as she did so. There she went, claiming her space as well as any wolf would, but Trent stopped those thoughts before they could go any further because now was neither the time nor the place.
"Slept?" he repeated, leaning his head back against the side of the ambulance, one foot up on the edge of the open back now, his leg bent up at the knee, his other dangling off with the toe of his work boot lightly scuffing the ground beyond. When he chuckled it was a hollow sort of sound, half-hearted to say the least. "No," he admitted, because there was no sense in lying to Venus. She would see right through it. She always did. "No, I can't." One hand lifted then and then the other came up to join it so he could swipe them over his face, rubbing his eyes a little with the heels of his palms as if just talking about sleep had made his body and mind realise how tired he was. Taking a deep breath he draped his arms over his stomach and turned his head to look at his fiancée. "Honestly, I haven't even tried." After the smallest, briefest smile, he went on, "There'll be plenty of time for that later." This was where he needed to be. Where he wanted to be. The fact that Venus had shown up to join him made this whole situation that much easier to bear.
