Normally Trent would have sensed her coming. Heard the distinct gait of her walk, the way the heels of her shoes landed, caught her distinct scent on the air, the scent he had committed to memory so soon after their first meeting all those years ago. Not tonight though, tonight he had too many things on his mind and he was just too distracted by them to notice anything going on around him. As a wolf that should have made him feel ashamed but he was too worried for that, the phone in his hand was too heavy for him to be concerned with anything remotely like image or reputation when members of his family were trapped inside that building and he had no way of getting to them.
It was only when Venus spoke, when he heard her voice, that he snapped out of his reverie, coming out of his deep and troubled thoughts abruptly and with an actual physical start. Trent almost dropped his cell phone, and in the next instant had to remind himself not to grip it too tightly so he wouldn't break it. "Hey," was the first word out of his mouth and he felt the smallest smile make its way onto his face, though it lacked its usual sincerity. Venus was right, of course, they wouldn't have made him come to work, not when two of his siblings were missing, but Trent hadn't thought for a second that he should call in.
"I needed to work," he said to her, shifting his weight in the back of the ambulance before pushing his phone back into his pocket, hoping that she would take the former as the invitation he'd meant it as: there was plenty of room for her to join him. "I couldn't just sit around and--" He stopped then, dropping his gaze and smiling. "I guess I'm still doing that, aren't I?" he said with the barest trace of a chuckle in his voice, turning his eyes towards the school that no one could access. "I don't know. I just needed to be here." Just in case. Trent wanted to be on the front line for when that barrier came down -- when, not if -- in case Lotti or Kyle needed him. Trent needed to be there to help them.
