It had to strike some people as strange that the two of them had bonded the way they had given how rare it had to be for any siren to forge any kind of friendship with a man, especially one whose life was so heavily dominated by violence. For all that though Carter and Athena had forged a friendship, and a close one at that, at least as far as the human was concerned. He trusted Athena to watch his back, trusted her with his very life in fact, and she had saved his skin on more than one occasion without expecting anything in turn and without having to be asked to do so. They had barely known one another the first time she had gone out of her way to do so and that had spoken volumes in Carter's mind about the measure of her character. Athena was one of the good ones, selfless and brave, and honestly there was no one outside of his own family he would rather have at his side in a fight.
Turning his head to look at Carter considered that question for a moment, weighing his options in terms of responses, before he shook his head, offering Athena something of a regretful smile. "Not your kind of quarry," he told her, trusting her to understand what he meant by that. He knew that the siren at his side never went out of her way to harm a woman, regardless of their inclination, and he would never ask that of her. "It was a lucky shot," he went on to add, glancing down at his side, "it could have been a lot worse." He was still alive, after all, and he didn't doubt that there were plenty who had gone up against the vampire who couldn't say the same.
