Traditional childhoods were an alien concept to most hunters, for one reason or another. Athena's had been untraditional because of what she was, or so Carter assumed, and his own had been far from ordinary because of his family's dedication to their calling and their insistence that training begin at an early age. For all that he considered them both well-adjusted individuals. They might not have had the childhoods that many of the students currently trapped within that school might have had -- were still having, technically, given their ages -- but their own upbringings, unusual as they were, hadn't harmed them in any way.
Athena was the one true friend he had encountered since coming to Scarlet Oak. Aiden was more of an ally than anything else, they exchanged tips and information and had fought side by side on a few occasions but with Athena it was different. Carter trusted her to have his back in a fight as he would have hers, and he believed in what she did with her powers and what they demanded of her. She might have been a siren but that didn't make her evil, she killed when it was justified, her prey were men who had hurt others and made them suffer. It was justice, plain and simple.
"Hm," was the sound he'd made when she'd said what she had about good news, the softest of nods adding weight to his agreement. His eyes turned her way when she answered his question and he appeared thoughtful for a few moments, as if trying to decide whether or not to offer some sort of reassurance or sympathy before deciding Athena probably wasn't out for either. She understood the situation as much as he did, and knew very well that anything might happen. She wasn't going to be fooled by commonplace platitudes. That bump earned her another smile, though there was a moment where his side twinged painfully and he had to fight back a wince. Even if she'd missed that he might as well be honest. He trusted her with the information. "Had an encounter with another hunter the night before last," he told her. "A vampire."
