Jadyn's eyes shot open without warning. She couldn't remember what she had been dreaming and it took several seconds before she realized that she was still not home in her bed. She wasn't sure how may days had passed since she was brought to this place, but she knew an eternity had passed, every time she opened her eyes it was in this windowless basement. There was something different this time. The usual cloud that clung to her thoughts had lifted, though it left behind feelings of light-headedness and nausea. Her mouth was dry and her throat felt like she had spent the past week gurgling gravel and shards of glass. She tried to push herself up onto her elbows, but found that the movement made her head sway and pound. Pressing her hands into her temples, Jadyn forced herself to sit up completely.
She took several deep breaths to avoid being sick, but she realized that there was something else that was different about her situation. The chain... It wasn't around her ankle anymore. She reached out and grabbed her ankle as if to make sure what she saw was real. She wasted no time in scrambling to her feet, but she found that her legs did not want to hold her up. She fell forward, the momentum causing a wave of nausea that she couldn't quite fight. Jadyn heaved onto the ground, but wiped her mouth on the back of her hand and pushed herself back up onto her feet. She managed to take a few shaky steps before she fell to her knees once more.
The overhead light was not on, but there was still light in the room. An eager glance around the room revealed that the light came from the open basement door. Jadyn didn't understand why the door was open or why her chain was no longer binding her, but she crawled up the stairs as quickly as she possibly could. She tripped when she came to the top of the stairs and hit the floor hard. She grunted from the pain, wincing as she continued to move through the doorway. She grabbed hold of the door frame and pulled herself back up to her feet, looking at her surroundings. She was next to a kitchen, the source of the light that had been pouring down into the basement. The first thing she saw was a door that she assumed led to the outside. With one hand on the wall, Jadyn rushed to the door and tried the handle. It wouldn't budge.
"Oh no, no no no," tears were burning at her eyes as she tugged and twisted at the handle. She slapped and kicked at the door, both futile efforts in opening it. She licked her lips and swallowed, whipping around and pressing her back to the door. She expected to see the vampire waiting behind her, but there was no one there. Her head was in agony and every second she was upright her stomach threatened to turn on her again. Whatever she had been given, she knew it had done a number on her. All Jadyn could think of now was how badly she needed to get out of the house.
