The falling rain had a calming, soothing effect on the children of the house, but the low rumblings of thunder caused Vicky Parker's only daughter to scream with fear. The three-year old's shrieks reverberated off of the walls, shaking the house nearly as much as the thunder itself. Baby Emyli could not stand storms despite the way her adopted brothers tried to reassure her that the storm would pass. Her tiny pale fists balled up into a tight knot of white knuckles and curled fingers while her eyes squeezed out hot tears to frame her reddening cheeks. Nothing that the boys would say could allay her fears and in the end, they returned to their toys and tried to shut out the sounds of their screaming sister.
It was the same for every storm. Even if Emyli had been dead asleep beforehand, the first growl of thunder stirred her awake and into a panicked frenzy. She cried until her throat burned and her voice rasped and there was only one thing that could calm her. Vicky reached out and claimed her daughter from the floor. She carried her screaming toddler to a small window that overlooked their yard. The heavy rainfall had created puddles of mud for the new drops to dance in while the wind pulled and twisted at the tops of the trees, braiding them together until they snapped and unraveled like twine. Blades of grass were laid flat from both the wind and rain and there was no sign of any creature, large or small, braving the storm.
Vicky began to sing.
Her voice was soft at first, but gradually grew stronger and filled the house with the melody. Even accompanied by nothing more than the guttural booms of thunder, the harsh whispers of wind, and the pattering of rain, it was a lovely sound. The boys stopped their game to listen to their mother's rich voice and their father looked up from the newspaper he had been aimlessly perusing. Vicky's voice warmed the dark house and everyone inside smile. Even Emyli.
Her screams ebbed as she was soothed by the intonations of her mother's voice. her hands loosened their grip and the last of her tears trickled off of her round cheeks. Vicky smiled at her daughter and smoothed the dark blonde hair that curled beneath Emyli's ears. As the storm began to move on and leave behind dying winds and rain, the rest of the world calmed as well. A flash of red past the window caught Emyli's eye and she leaned forward, resting her hands on the window so she could see through it better. The cardinal perched on the railing of their porch, shifting his feathers so the water trailed off of him. His head bobbed and tilted such that he appeared to be looking right at Emyli. He blinked and she laughed, the childish mirth rocking her back against her mother.
"Bird!" She squealed.
"A pretty bird for a pretty girl," Vicky pressed a tender kiss to her daughter's temple.
