What? Dalila looked away from Darklis at the buzz in her head, like she had heard something, but she did not know the voice, not the voice, the thought... it was a voice, it was like her voices. Voices to her, not to anyone else, like hearing her familiar talk... only Jaws was not here. She would have loved to have Jaws here with her, she could have used his shouting in her head to keep her calm. Lumen was not helping. Mr. Wrigley was not helping. Darklis was mostly helping, but there was something rattling around in her head that was not and as the vampire picked up the phone to call out there was a pained feeling in her stomach that something was not-
"I wonder how long it's gonna be until they figure out it's not gonna work." A snicker that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up straighter than they had already been and Dalila clamped her free hand over her mouth to try and keep the whimper in. They was a drawl in that, a definite drawl, and it was female. But not Lumen, not Darklis, not her, so... where... she did not hear voices, she heard thoughts. Thoughts. People's thoughts. Except those people did not have thoughts. Only when she heard that, right after, she heard Darklis thinking that the phone was dead and she glanced over at her, her mouth working, but no noise coming out. She shook her head hard at the suggestion of going back out there, but before she could get the rest of it out, the staticked thoughts, the stop-and-start of four different minds she had never heard before that were only trickling became a full-on flood and she stumbled under the weight of thoughts she never wanted to hear.
"Blonde has nice legs."
"Not enough fat..."
"Take whatcha get; arms looked nice on that redhead."
"Dammit where's mah dinner?! I hear 'em out there, chattin' it up, GET IT OVER WITH!"
Darklis was saying things out in the other room and Lumen had before, but it didn't matter. Dalila's eyes were wild as she pushed herself up - when had she fallen down? - and her cheeks were wet and threw herself out into that room. Her stomach heaved when she looked out at those people and their thoughts roared up again. Now that she could hear them it was like she could not shut them out and she whimpered again, her hand going out to close over the wrist of the nearest person. Lumen. "They know that," she managed to get out. The hysteria was showing in her voice as clearly as it was in her eyes, but she could not look at them. "We have to go, we have to go now. Now, right now." She tugged on Lumen's wrist, forgetting that she had a hurt leg or ankle or whatever had been hurt, her mind completely full of the thoughts of these people - people? They're not people!! - and just trying to get her back towards that room because it was either back there or past them and that big guy right there was... way too big. "Now, please, Darklis listen to me, I can hear them." She was breathing hard as she looked at the vampire, trying to keep back the sobs that were threatening to choke her because she knew what they were going to do.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw the women she had hardly looked at reach for something and a little thread of whatever was keeping her voice near a normal range snapped and she stretched out herself for the pitcher of water she had seen, the bit that was in there listening and shooting into that woman's eyes before she could reach whatever the hell it was. Probably a giant fork or skewer. Five, five, five, there's FIVE, I've only seen two... "THEY'RE GOING TO EAT US."
And when that was being shouted by the girl who lived with sharks and dated a vampire? You listened.
