sorry i'm not sorry
Who: Harper and Josh
When: Afternoon
Where: Sherry's Bakery
Last night was certainly… interesting. That was about the best word that Josh could find to describe what he had experienced. If last night had just been him picking Harper off the floor and making sure she didn’t fall asleep in a puddle of her own sick, he would have been happy to wake up the next day and go on pretending as though nothing had ever happened; but instead, Harper had to go and drop a bomb on him. How was he supposed act now? It was easy to pretend that he didn’t remember her when he thought that she had forgotten him completely. But now he knew that wasn’t true; more than that, now he knew that she hadn’t even come close to forgiving him. Josh couldn’t say that he blamed her and he didn’t expect her to ever forgive him, but where did that leave things between them?
He hadn’t spent all night at Harper’s place, but he still felt the need to sleep in a couple hours later than usual this morning. Once he got up and made himself breakfast – anything he could get his hands on that wasn’t eggs – he had to decide what to do with the rest of the day. Before yesterday, he had fully planned on going over to the bakery and picking up his special dozen of cupcakes. Today, he didn’t feel so comfortable heading next door. Josh hadn’t named a specific date to pick up his pastries, but something told him that if he waited too long between visits Harper would suspect something. Besides, she had to remember something from the night before and he would hate for her to think that he was avoiding her just because she had gotten a little tipsy (and a lot undressed).
A little while after lunch, Josh finally stopped over-thinking long enough to decide to walk next door. He had barely a foot inside the front door when the sight of another customer took him aback. Of course he knew that Harper had other customers – how else could he keep her doors open? – but he had always managed to time his visits such that no one came in until he was ready to leave. He shuffled off to the side, awkwardly shoving his hands into his jean pockets as he tried to find something to do with himself while he waited. Without a conversation to occupy him, his mind was free to run back onto the over-thinking train – at least until he started listening to the conversation between Harper and the man in line ahead of him.
“So you baked all of these yourself?”
Josh raised his eyebrow at the obvious flirtatious tone in the man’s voice. He didn’t claim to be an expert on Harper’s “type” but something told him that a slightly overweight thirty-something year old was the kind of guy that she didn’t typically go for.
“Gorgeous and a good cook? Aren’t you just the perfect package?”
“Oh, boy.” Josh couldn’t help but mutter and laugh under his breath at that horrible line. He couldn’t claim to be the smoothest of talkers, but he certainly had a lot more game than this poor schlub. The key was to compliment a lady without laying it on too thick. This guy was practically putting it on in layers.
“Maybe I could have your number and I can cook something for you?”
Up until this point, Josh had been waiting for Harper to cut him down. She was a strong, opinionated woman; she didn’t need him to jump to her rescue. Still… Something about the man, most likely the fact that he had been presumptuous enough to ask for Harper’s number, made him unable to simply sit back and remain a spectator. “Listen guy,” Josh said as stepped up beside the man and placed a hand on his shoulder. “I’m afraid Harper here is more than a little out of your league.” His tone was entirely apologetic, though he didn’t feel close to sorry about what he had said. He offered a smile to the man than matched his tone before changing it to one that was more friendly when he looked over at Harper, fully looking at her for the first time since he walked in. It took a moment for him to take in her outfit. Yeah, definitely out of his league.
