She turned her head and stared at him for a full minute at his answer. "Never. Any games ever." She wasn't asking to reaffirm, not really. She wasn't deaf and she had an idea that Sam was not the sort of person to say something unless he meant it. She repeated his words out of both disbelief and shock. In this day and age, it was hard to know someone who had not at least played some kind of game, even if it was some mindless social network game. "Alright then," she nodded, her lips forming a thin line of determination. "Just means we'll have to teach you how to play." She started clicking several buttons, backing out until she arrived at the main game menu. "So. Basically it's the zombie apocalypse versus four survivors who stick together to duke it out with the creep-os... You know what? The opening cut scene does a better job than me," she reset the console. "D'you want something to drink or something?" She jumped up and trotted to the kitchen to fetch herself a glass of water, not really waiting for Sam's answer. She grabbed two glasses and a pitcher of water out of the refrigerator while the opening scene played on the television. She was back in her spot on the couch right about the time the witch was trying to tear through the door.
"Oh, that doesn't actually work. Witches tear through doors like nobody's business." Farren remarked, filling the glasses with water and handing one to Sam. She quietly drank her water and watched Sam out of the corner of her eye. She was curious to know how someone who had never ever played games before would react. Once the scene was finished, she retrieved her controller and set up a co-op so she and Sam could start out on a level just the two of them plus two computer controlled characters. "I'll set it up on easy to start off with. Okay, so first thing's first. Your controller," she gestured with her own. "You're going to want to select a character to play. If you don't really care who, just leave it on random." Using her own, she selected Zoey, both because she was the only female and also because she was Farren's favorite character. "Now, once it gets started, it's just fighting for survival. That's the goal. Stick together to increase your odds. Simple enough, right?" she grinned before leaning over to start pointing at the buttons on his controller.
"You're going to use this joystick here to direct the way you look and this joystick to actually move around. The cross here? That's called the D-Pad. You can pick stuff up and that's going to let you select it at times. Hitting up turns your flashlight on and off, though the only time you want it off is if there's a witch nearby. Oh yeah," Farren never would have made it as a teacher. She sped along in her lecture and then had more tangents than she had points. "A witch is one of the special infected. You've got your regular, run of the mill zombies and the specials. Specials are hunters -- that one in the hoodie who pounced Louis -- boomers, which are fat zombies that puke all over you and attract other zombies, smokers -- that one with the tongue that wrapped up Bill in the beginning -- then witches and tanks. The last two are the worst and hardest to beat most of the time. You want to stay away from witches; you'll hear them crying long before you see them and they have special music that gets louder and more intense the closer you are to them. If you startle the witch, she'll only come after you. Tanks are unavoidable and come at certain points throughout the game, usually when you're trying to do something important. If you're not hurrying somewhere, you can hear them grunting before they actually come after you. They'll throw stuff at you, so don't stand in one place for too long..." She twisted her mouth a bit as she tried to remember if there was anything else to show him before they got started.
