Moments after the landlady had stopped by and promised she was doing everything she possibly could to get the power back on, Keelin decided now was as good a time as any to give Kahlan a gift. She had taken her sister to the mall to buy her some maternity clothes that looked comfortable and at least a little stylish. Of course, Keelin had no idea what sorts of clothes her sister liked, so she let Kahlan choose to her heart's desire. She did manage to slip off at one point when Kahlan was tired of walking and wanted to sit outside of one of the food shops. In that brief time on her own, Keelin decided there was something else that Kahlan was going to need in the future, but she wasn't sure when to give it to her. Kahlan did not talk about the baby very much and Keelin knew even less about the child's father. To be honest, they had not sat down and really talked about each other's lives since their separation as children. She knew the basics: Kahlan had lost her bakery and was pregnant and needed help, but the details were a mystery.
On top of everything, she felt the overwhelming drive to do something nice for her sister. Kahlan had managed to get a job since arriving in town, but it was only a matter of time before she would have to take her maternity leave. And then? Keelin had no idea if her sister would be able to find a place to live by the time the baby was born. Keelin's apartment wasn't small by any means, but two full-grown women and a newborn baby would make her living conditions suddenly cramped. And yet, she didn't seem to mind the idea of having a baby around in the apartment. Pugsley would certainly enjoy the company of something as small as he was. Perhaps it was the fact that she'd never had any children and she still hoped to someday that made her so open to the idea of Kahlan and the baby staying for a while in her apartment.
"This is the first storm I've really seen like this since moving here," Keelin said as she emerged from her room, toting a small purple gift bag. "Hopefully it clears up by tomorrow so the kids get to have their homecoming dance. I did tell you that I was chaperoning that, didn't I? I'll only be gone for a few hours, but you can call if you need anything." Was she rambling? Oh yes. Just because she wasn't sure how Kahlan would react to the onesie that was folded neatly inside of the bag. "I-I got you something else while we were at the mall. I'm not sure if you'll like it or not and I realize that it's too big, but I thought maybe it could be grown into. Here," she handed the bag over and sat down next to her sister on the couch. "I hope you like it."
