decisions are hard!
Who: Adelaide and Daisy
Where: Supermarket
When: Afternoon
A chill ran down Daisy’s spine as she stepped out of the cool September afternoon air and into the chill of the supermarket. The time of year was steadily approaching when she would have no choice but to start wearing more layers of clothing or risk getting sick. While she wasn’t particularly bothered by the idea of a week with the sniffles, she knew that Joseph would have none of it. But there was no need to worry about any of that today; colds, imaginary or otherwise, were as far from her mind as they could possibly be. Realizations, especially those that should have been obvious, tended to hit Daisy like a ton of bricks. She had been sitting on the couch, mindlessly flipping through boring day-time talk shows, when she realized that she had yet to bake anything in the kitchen of her nice, new home; cook, yes – there had been plenty of that – but never bake. Daisy’s cooking abilities were questionable at best, but when it came to making tasty treats, she would boast that she was especially skilled. Once she started thinking about making a batch of cookies – OH! Or even better cupcakes! – it was hard for her to think about anything else. The next task, once she had finally found her way to the store, was what exactly to buy. Her cart was already full of ingredients for making more sugar cookies than two people could possibly eat by themselves, and she was facing a dilemma over which kind of cake mix to use for cupcakes. Vanilla. No, Red Velvet? Or maybe Funfetti this time? Daisy changed her humming tune to one of deep consideration as she bounced back and forth between the different boxes. It would have been so much easier to have Joseph nearby so that he could give her a nod or even silence that let her know that he would be happy with whatever she chose. She bit her lip and turned her head to look down both sides of the aisle around her. There was only one other person standing near her. Daisy studied the other woman and decided in a half-second that she looked absolutely stunning. Women who dressed and carried themselves with class fascinated her, mostly because she hoped that one day she might look like them. Daisy had a ways to go if her bright dress and galaxy tights were any indication. As much as she loved her outfits, even she could see that she looked like a child compared to what the other woman was wearing. But Daisy had never been one to be put off by the appearances of others. It wasn’t the wrapping that mattered anyway; all that counted was the person inside! She grabbed two boxes off the shelf – Red Velvet and Funfetti – and half-skipped, half-ran toward the older woman. “Hello!” The greeting was almost as abrupt as the bright, giddy smile that was stretched across her face. “If someone were making you cupcakes, which would you pick?” Daisy held up each of the boxes, waving them back and forth as if to coax an answer out of the stranger. There was a beat of silence before she quickly added, “I’m going to make cupcakes later for my boyfriend and I can’t decide which kind he would like the best.” Her nose wrinkled as she made a slight giggle. By all means, she shouldn’t have been so excited about baking, but that was exactly what she was. |
