There was a peaceful split-second that washed over Lumen as she opened her eyes slowly to meet the bright light of day. But as soon as that moment passed, the pain that came from sleeping on a park bench hit her body. Her knees were cramped into the space between the back of the bench and the seat, and at some point in the night, she had scooted until her head hung awkwardly off the edge. Too add to it, Polly had decided to use her side as a pillow. Lumen let out a groan of pain and annoyance as she stretched out and encouraged her familiar to get off of her. ‘You wouldn’t be so sore if you hadn’t burnt your house down,’ Polly snarked as she performed a stretch of her own. She ignored the cat as she slowly pushed herself upward and yawned as she looked out over the park. It looked different this early in the morning than it did in the afternoons when she usually came out. There were certainly more joggers running around. As if on cue a female jogger passed by wearing nothing by tight shorts and a sports bra. Lumen rolled her eyes. There was a fall chill in the air, so practicality had nothing to do with what she was wearing. Was there really a point in dressing that way when there was no one around to see her? ‘Maybe she likes her outfit. Why are you so concerned about what she wears, Lumen?’ “I’m not.” The two of them sat on the bench watching the comings and goings of others for a few hours. Every so often, Polly would wake up from one of her many brief naps to ask what their next step was, but the question was usually met with silence or a flat “I don’t know”. Lumen hadn’t thought this far ahead. She had no idea what she was going to do now. There was no way that she was going over to Dalila’s house, which was the first place she usually went when things were bad at home. Aside from her “friend”, Lumen didn’t know anyone else well enough to seek refuge with them. She was homeless. Well it’s better than what I had before. ‘Really?’ Yes. She decided to stretch her legs and go for a walk around noon. Maybe the movement would give her a good idea of what to do next. Bags strapped to her back and cat walking at her side, Lumen began to circle the park’s walking path. Not even twenty steps in and her eyes caught sight of a face she thought she would never see again. “Hey!” Her call didn’t have quite the volume it needed to catch Joseph’s attention, but she had been so surprised and – honestly – excited that she hadn’t known what to do. When he hadn’t turned around, Lumen changed her direction to follow the other elemental’s path. She was just about to get into calling distance, but before she tried getting his attention again, curiosity took hold of her. Lumen hadn’t learned very much about Joseph during their first meeting and she couldn’t help but admit that she was incredibly curious about how he lived his life. ‘We’re stalking now?’ “Looks like it.” |
